He has published extensively (h-index 75) and delivered more than 500 invited lectures globally. Dr. Butt’s work, education and training experience spans several countries over five continents. Dr. Butt has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards, including a Fulbright Scholarship, Yale-Johnson and Johnson Award in International Health, a National Talent Pool Scholars Award and IDSA Training Faculty award to Africa. Dr. Butt has lectured extensively around the world and provided advice and consultation to governments, NGOs, academia, and healthcare systems in building research, educational and training capacity in resource limited settings. From 2015-2017, Dr. Butt served as the first Chief Quality Officer at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Doha, Qatar. Dr. Butt was responsible for all regulatory, accreditation, compliance, quality, patient safety, risk management, utilization review, infection control, and maintenance of policies and procedures for the whole corporation. In 2016, under Dr. Butt’s leadership, HMC became the first healthcare system globally to have all its hospitals accredited by JCI under the Academic Medical Center standards. Dr. Butt was also appointed as the first Director of Hamad Healthcare Quality Institute, which is a hub for the nation and region for improving healthcare quality, health systems improvement, and clinical effectiveness and outcomes research. From 2014 to 2021 , Dr. Butt also held the position of Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs in the Department of Medicine at HMC. During Dr. Butt’s tenure, the Department grew from 248 to 381 full time physicians spread across all hospitals. He oversaw the career development, appraisals, performance and promotions, compliance with national and international standards and regulations, credentialing and faculty appointments of all physicians in the department. From 2011-2013, Dr. Butt held the position of Chair of Medicine at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, Abu Dhabi, UAE (SKMC). During Dr. Butt’s tenure, the department consisted of 12 divisions comprising of 125 physicians. Within one year of Dr. Butt assuming leadership, the department experienced a 6% growth in outpatient volume, 16% growth in inpatient volume, 35% increase in total billing and 31% increase in actual collections.

Dr. Butt also initiated the physician work quantification project, using the work Relative Value Unit (wRVU) system, and incorporated quantification and quality metrics into physician appraisals. Dr. Butt initiated the annual State of the Department meeting immediately after joining, instituted a Reward and Recognition program, created multiple department performance and activity dashboards, and streamlined all operations.

Chief Quality OfficerHamad Medical Corporation Mar 2015 - Sep 2017As the first Chief Quality Officer for Hamad Medical Corporation, Dr. Butt was responsible for creating the full structure and governance of the Quality Department. The departments under the Chief Quality Officer Group included Regulatory, Accreditation and Compliance Services, Quality and Patient Safety, Clinical Risk Management, Infection Control, Informatics Support, and Patient and Provider Experience. A functional reporting structure and shared decision making, and governance groups were set up with representation from each of the corporate facilities. In 2016, under Dr. Butt’s leadership, HMC achieved the unique distinction becoming the first healthcare system across the globe to have all its hospitals accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) under the Academic Medical Center standards. It also became the first hospital system outside of the United States to achieve JCI Academic Medical Center accreditation for all its hospitals simultaneously. As the Corporate Chief Quality Officer, Dr. Butt also served on the executive management board of HMC. Dr. Butt developed and oversaw the structure and governance of all Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Patient Experience activities across the Corporation. He also managed external partnerships and contracts with various organizations including the Joint Commission International and Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
