My roles as a Health Educator encompassed health education and promotion, relationship-building with community-based organizations and local Public Health Departments, advocacy, and community outreach. The majority of my outreach and education efforts, as well as partnerships with community organizations and health care facilities were in rural, agricultural areas of California, As a Health Educator, I facilitated discussions among teens and young adults related to pregnancy prevention and STI prevention; I developed reproductive health curriculum to train Promotores to outreach to migrant farmworkers in order to promote reproductive health peer education and awareness of reproductive health care services and facilities nearby. I co-facilitated a secondary teen pregnancy group in which I educated young mothers to set SMART goals for post-secondary education attainment, and I encouraged members to consider long-acting reversible contraceptives or plan to use their current method consistently and correctly. Advocacy work within Planned Parenthood involved annual meetings with state legislative aides in opposition to state budget cuts to the state Medicaid program (Medi-Cal) and family-planning insurance program (Family PACT), and support of comprehensive sexual education state legislation. I worked closely with a local Planned Parenthood health center on a program to increase awareness and utilization of the health center by low-income populations and other vulnerable populations. These efforts resulted in an increase in received visitations to the health center over several months after efforts began.

Awarded a competitive, paid post-baccalaureate public health internship by Health Career Connection. Served as the Policy and Advocacy intern at the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, a non-profit public policy organization working to support and advocate for legislation that improves the health and well-being of the Latino community in the state of California. As an intern, I tracked the advancement of health-related policies and legislation, worked with other organizations in coordinating efforts to reach common goals, and assisted in the drafting of policy briefs.
