Responsible for co-ordinating and directing a team of waste specialists. The team’s primary function is to ensure that the site’s waste is managed in an integrated and optimised manner in accordance with legislative requirements and Magnox Company Standards. Main Achievements:• Introduced new processes and procedures for managing metallic and combustible Low Level Waste (LLW) to support delivery of the Magnox-Low Level Waste Repository Joint LLW Management Plan.• Developed and introduced Wylfa’s first Site Waste Management Plan and Project Waste Management Plans.• Provided the underpinning justification and specifications for the purchase of a £250K state of the art Waste Assay System for Very Low Level Waste activity assessment.• Managed the introduction of a sophisticated software based waste tracking system (EMWaste) to support the compliant management of both radioactive and non-radioactive waste from generation, through transport and to final treatment and disposal.• Prepared numerous sampling and analysis plans to ensure waste is effectively characterised and disposed of appropriately. • Managed and developed the Site Waste Inventory and Hazard Indicator Reporting, including the alignment of the SMART LLW inventory with the Site Life Time Plan costs• Effective development and delivery of waste management training and workshops for both staff and contractors.• Delivery of various presentations to the Waste Sub group of the Wylfa Site Stakeholder Group.• Formally appointed Radioactive Waste Advisor and Radiological Protection Supervisor.• Safety Case Author for a Category 2 Plant Modification Submission (Topic Report-Radioactive Waste Facilities and Discharges) to support the Wylfa Periodic Safety Review 2014-2024.
Assistant Engineer Health Physics
Responsible for providing authoritative advice on radiological safety standards, overseeing gaseous and liquid radioactive discharges from the plant and managing the Environmental Monitoring Programme. Main achievements:• Successfully completed an intensive training programme involving various in-house and Health Protection Agency courses at first attempt. Gained Accredited Health Physicist status in 2009 enabling me to act as an authoritative source of advice on radiological safety and sign off Health Physics Certificates. I received a personal commendation from the Site Director for my achievements.• Improved the radioactive effluent database management system to reduce both the time spent preparing statutory monthly returns and the number of transcription errors thus ensuring compliance with Environmental Permitting regulations 2010.• Successfully managed and improved various aspects of the Environmental Monitoring Programme, including an upgrade to the gamma spectrometry software which featured in article written by a highly regarded company in the field.• Managed and facilitated the personal development of a team of Health Physics Assistants.• Assisted in directing and clarifying future reporting requirements for effluent samples with below Minimal Detectable Activity (MDA) results from all Magnox stations which ultimately influenced the Environment Agency recommendations. • Prepared and presented an I4 (Inspire, Imagine, Innovate and Implement), idea to the Site Executive and was awarded prize for runner up.• Prepared Wylfa’s first Environmental Report which was benchmarked as best practice across the former Magnox North sites.• Applied for a variation to an existing bespoke Environment Permit and successfully revoked an oil in water discharge limit that was originally imposed under the Water Resource Act.
Manager Of Research And Development (Chemistry Division)
Responsible for the planning and delivery of various research and development projects and ensuring production targets for gas sensors were met.Main achievements: • Developed an electroplating technique for an electrochemical sensor and established a reliable and commercially viable in-house sensor production line. • Developed methods to ensure the in-house gas standards achieved traceability to international standards.• Designed equipment and developed methods for the sampling and analysis of gases in collaboration with another company.• Represented the company at number of exhibitions and conferences and prepared associated papers and conference proceedings. • Successfully managed a team of two other chemists and met all production and safety targets.
