Having set up and run a social enterprise, Cracking Good Food, for 10 years, that helped communities to connect to local, sustainable food production and cooking, my artwork within the textile system deals exclusively with the same issues. These of course are models by which corporations produce both food and clothing en masse, for maximum profit, with complete disregard for workers’ rights and the environmental damage such quantities of production and waste create. The focus of my work is fast fashion and its reliance on oil, which now accounts for 69% of all textile output. This is predicted to rise to 73% by 2030. Collaborating with a Material Scientist I undertook a form of reverse alchemy, enabling me to subsequently calculate how much oil is needed to make a synthetic garment. The UK wastes an average of 220 tons of textiles each year. Using this calculation, I was able to determine that it would require the equivalent of 20 oil tankers for its production.This process has been captured in my film Fabric of Oil. 5 mins. https://vimeo.com/740285842​Using only discarded materials, I have visualised Kate Raworth’s economic #DoughnutTheory, that clearly defines the ecological ceiling beneath which we must all live, and we're not. ​Consulating too with a Geologist, I have melted 4 garments, three synthetic and one viscose, a cellulose fibre to reveal their materiality. The melted plastic resembles a fossil and a new rock formation that geologists now identify as ‘plastiglomerate’, indicative of our anthropogenic impact on the planet. Viscose requires a neuro-toxic solvent to process it, resulting in premature death for those handling it. The terrariums contain a living strata with oil and its bi-products at its base and flax, a regenerative, carbon absorbing plant, traditionally grown for its fibres to make linen, grown on top.
