I was employed for 4 years as a HIV-1 Research Scientist in the Department of Virology at the Royal Free Hospital, London NHS Foundation Trust following several postdoctoral positions at University College London (UCL). My role was divided equally into performing routine diagnostic work within the Retrovirology section, which focuses on HIV-1, HCV, HBV, Influenza and CMV drug resistance and attending weekly HCV MDTs and HIV-1 virtual clinics, whereby patients are discussed with pharmacists, nurses and clinicians. The remainder of my time was dedicated to HIV-1 and HCV research and development and teaching qualified Biomedical Scientists and Medical students and visiting students the practical and theoretical aspects of viral drug resistance. I developed an in-house HIV-1 integrase resistance assay and several HCV NS5A genotypic specific resistance assays, to detect resistant viral variants to FDA approved antiviral drug inhibitors, which were fully validated and employed as part of the routine diagnostic service. I presented my research findings at international scientific meetings and published my research findings in peer review articles. I undertook 454 pyro-sequencing to determine the clinical implications of HIV-1 resistant minority variants in patients failing ART and was involved in generating and co-ordinating data for “CORONET” a European collaborative study, which focuses on resistance to HIV-1 integrase drug inhibitors that are used in 1st and 2nd line ART. In addition, I attended weekly MDTs and was responsible for updating databases on newly diagnosed HIV-1 patients and HCV patients enrolled onto Expanded Access Program (EAP) and took part in regular CPD activities (writing SOPs, performing horizontal and vertical audits and attend departmental tutorials).

Post-doctoral research fellow, involved in the DART trial in Africa- monitoring HIV-1 drug resistance in patients receiving HAART in the absence of viral load monitoring in Uganda and Zimbabwe. My research work focused on sequencing the entire region of HIV-1 gag, protease and the connection and RNase H domain of RT in HIV-1infected patients failing on ART in Africa, to determine the impact of resistant variants on drug susceptibility and viral fitness and evolution of resistance over time. I also visited the laboratories in Africa and provided technical and scientific support so that they could perform resistance testing in-house.
