Production of a biopolymer and evaluation of its effect on the viability of probiotic microorganisms (patent pending).- Produced a biopolymer (protein-like) using different bacterial strains and media in shake flasks and 5 L fermenter.- Produced the polymer with different yields (up to 22.3 g/l) and characteristics such as molecular weight, crystallinity & form (acid/salt).- Used produced polymer (with specific properties) for a novel probiotic application as a cryoprotectant to protect the viability of 3 probiotic bacteria (B. breve, B. longum, L. paracasei) during freeze drying.- Increased shelf life of a non-dairy probiotic food product using the produced biopolymer.- Used biopolymer to protect Bifidobacteria in simulated gastric juice (pH 2.0) for 4 h. Bacteria survived with very little loss (<0.47 log CFU/ml) or no loss in viability.

Responsibilities included –• Application and product development by conducting lab research using range of Aber Instruments’ products.• Problem solving of online biomass determination using Aber technology for new and upcoming brewing/biotech fermentation applications. • Providing technical support to customers across U.S.A., Europe and India.• Visiting industrial sites in Europe and India to explore the pharmaceutical market, commissioning on site and making technical presentations and demonstrations.• Writing scientific publications for Aber Instruments.
