Honeywell Transportation

Project: Pre consolidation server assessment At Honeywell Transportation, the project involved performing server assessment for about 156 servers spread across 4 major locations in the U.S. The objective was to collect data such as the load average, the disk space utilization, CPU utilization, list of applications running, etc on a server so as to enable Honeywell to perform server consolidation of their infrastructure. Initially, Honeywell had planned to send me to each of the 4 locations to do an assessment. However, I found a way whereby we could collect all the data without physically logging on to every system. I thus ended up creating a generic shell script to collect information from all the UNIX based systems (which included Linux, AIX, Solaris and HP-UX) and used WMI scripting infrastructure to collect information from windows based systems, thus automating the whole process. The initial timeframe for the project was 2 months; however, I was able to complete the task at hand in just about 3 weeks. This was a major cost saving for the client than what was originally estimated. Following is a listed account of the activities performed Activities:1. Shell scripting to automate the process of collecting data for server consolidation tapping data such as CPU Utilization, Network activity, Installed Application list, Process List, Disk Capacity, Disk Configuration etc from about 125 Unix servers2. Using the WMI Infrastructure to script for windows servers to tap data similar to that tapped for Unix Systems from about 36 Window servers3. Report generation based on the data collected, citing out clearly the status of every server being considered for server consolidation.
