My research focuses on investigating the structural and mechanical properties of biological materials, including the study of ageing and pathological processes. I am also interested in the degradation and preservation of cultural artifacts, historical buildings, and civil infrastructure. We apply a state of the art in situ and multi-scale charachterization techniques (combining Raman, AFM, fluorescence, SEM and in situ mechanical testing) for the high resolution chemical and structural characterization of biological and building materials.

Professor Masic is the Founder and Faculty Director of the MIT Refugee Action Hub (MIT ReACT), an initiative launched in 2017 when the challenge of refugee education was presented at MIT SOLVE. Drawing on MIT’s strengths in global impact and educational innovation, ReACT’s mission is to design and deliver new learning opportunities for refugees and forcibly displaced populations worldwide.

My research focus was the development of innovative spectroscopic methodologies, based on Raman and Infra-Red (IR) spectral imaging for use in characterizing biological tissues and biomimetic materials. Specifically, I aimed to understand the response of biological tissue (such as bone, skin, elastomeric protein fibers, tooth etc.) to mechanical action and link molecular structural organization and composition to the physical properties of the material. Furthermore, I explored fundamental mechanisms of biomineralization by studying specific biological models (bone callus, embryonal mouse bone, crayfish gastroliths and teeth).In collaboration with BAM, BESSY and University of Torino, I worked on damage assessment of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
