Student Assistant - Engineering & Architectural Sciences
As an intern for the CA Department of Water Resources, Division of Flood Management, I was responsible for carrying out several duties in support of Division projects related to both planning and implementation including the following:•Perform AutoCAD Civil 3D drafting for Division flood risk reduction projects including the Lower Elkhorn Levee Setback project adjacent to the the Yolo Bypass and Sacramento Bypass.•Assist in development of products that integrate climate change impacts, such as sea level rise, into local floodplain management.•Conduct briefings to both upper management and Division staff on coastal floodplain management projects.•Development of map products delineating flood hazards, flood statistics in California, and other flood system features both for external audiences including the legislature, general public, and partner agencies as well as for internal Division staff.•Assist Division of Flood Management Communications staff in the development and review of internal and external outreach projects including annual Accomplishments Reports, California Flood Preparedness material, and other key outreach.•Development of graphics including posters and fact sheets using Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Visio and Picture Manager for various projects.•Organize tours of the Sacramento and San Joaquin flood management systems for internal Division of Flood Management staff including visits to key weirs, bypasses, pumping plants and other hydraulic control structures. •Conduct assessment of the accuracy and completeness of facts/statistics for inclusion into reports, newsletters, magazines, etc.

BCDC is a regulatory agency charged with the protection and enhancement of the San Francisco Bay by regulating and enforcing all development in the bay and 100-feet inland from the shoreline, encompassing nine counties. Under one of the Commission's registered Professional Engineers, I performed the following duties:•Conduct on-site evaluations of projects for conformance with authorized development •Help draft Letters of Notice and Letters of Approval to developers seeking project permit approval.•Review engineering plans pursuant to Commission permits•Analysis of submitted engineering plans to reflect future flooding projections pursuant to BCDC Climate Change Policies•Review and analyze issued and pending permits •Evaluate proposed development for conformance with Commission's policies including compliance with Sea Level Rise (SLR) policies•Completed Tidal Datums training to inform and present to staff on future SLR trends•Help staff conduct surveys of sandy Bay beaches to support research on beach erosion zones.
