Intern And Consultant
Article 19 is a leading civil society organization focused on the defence of the rights to freedom of expression and to information. As an intern at Article 19's Law and Policy programme, I conducted research on international standards and comparative law concerning freedom of speech in the digital sphere. I took part in the following actions: - I conducted research on the ongoing legislative review of two European directives (on copyright and audiovisual media services). I compared the wording of these directives, as it was produced by several legislative committees within the European Parliament, against international standards on Internet intermediary liability.- I carried out fifteen case studies on real-life hate speech instances in online and offline media. These examples were used as material for debate in a symposium of European media regulators organised in London on October 2017.- I drafted a comparative legal analysis of website blocking in 10 different European countries. This research was used in an amicus curiae brief submitted to the European Court of Human Rights.Since October 2017, I was an external consultant for Article 19's communications department.
Co-Founder
In 2015 I co-founded CompanyExpress.es (http://companyexpress.es), the first legal services e-commerce for incorporating Spanish companies. I was the co-founder and manager of this project, which comprised a team of three people. - I identified and designed a product that did not exist, at the time, in the Spanish legal services market: an online service that allowed entrepreneurs to incorporate a company in short time, and at a low cost, from home.- In twelve months, we were able to create from scratch a new business model, and to incorporate dozens of companies.
Attorney
I worked for more than five years as corporate lawyer in DiG Advocats, a great Barcelona-based law firm specialized in providing legal services for Spanish and foreign companies,Most of my clients operated in the digital sector. I advised them on squarely corporate matters, such as acquisition of or investment in private companies, and on everyday commercial matters related to Intellectual Property, data transfers, and the Internet.Key achievements:- I have extensive experience in understanding and working with radically different legal systems. I advised clients in M&A operations executed in countries as diverse as Colombia (2011), China (2012), and the French Guyana (2014).- I represented clients in judicial procedures related to civil law issues such as the breach of a distribution contract (claimed amount 6.5M Euros), or a quarrel between shareholders (claimed amount 5M Euros).- In 2014 I designed an entirely new litigation strategy for claiming back Spain's tax on the transmission of real estate properties (‘Plusvalía Municipal'), in those cases where a property had been sold at a loss because its owners were not able to face mortgage repayment - a common occurrence in post-recession Spain.
Co-Founder
In September 2012 I co-founded Babanjo Radio, a startup that developed a mobile application designed for listening and interacting with all the radio stations in Spain. My role as Babanjo Radio's CFO involved three separate areas. - First, I was responsible for the financial management of the company, and for designing a reporting system aimed at controlling the company's performance. I oversaw the budget of our six-person operation. - Secondly, I was responsible for fundraising and for dealing with our investors. In this sense, I should point out that we successfully raised more than 150,000 EUR in private and public financing. In third place, as a member of the founding team I was part of the general management of the company. Babanjo Radio was an extremely challenging project, as we had to create a complex technological platform from scratch. I learnt the hard way how to (and how not to) manage a team, and to implement a multidimensional project.
