Our main focus was salmon habitat restoration, all of our projects and activities aimed at restoring and enhancing the environment in wetland/riparian areas to make them a more suitable spawning habitat for salmon. We planted native trees and shrubs on river banks and marshes situated adjacent to farms and cow pastures to provide shade to the water, prevent soil erosion, and filter out pollutants (fecal material, herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, etc.) from the soil which would have otherwise leached into the water.

    I worked as a volunteer lab technician in the Clonal Analysis Lab under Beverly Torok-Storb and Micheal Harkey. While their I lysed canine blood cells, isolated the DNA with magnetic beads, amplified the DNA strands with PCR, and ran the DNA on gel electrophoresis. I did some computer work as well, I updated blood file logs. I also helped organize tissue slides and tissue blocks as well. I also helped to establish a chemical inventory. I was also taught how to maintain a cell culture as well. This started out as just a volunteer position, but Mrs. Beverly Torok-Storb was so impressed with the quality of my work that she ended up paying me a stipend of $1000.
