In August 2023, as leader of a small team, I helped to carry out a multi-stage production of a novel new encapsulated RNA-based vaccine. This was at the same time as an audit by the MHRA- which was successful… CPI’s RNA Centre of Excellence was awarded a GMP Certificate / Licence and subsequently a MIA (IMP) in February 2024. There are now plans to produce more innovative RNA projects, under GMP conditions, e.g., anti-virals and anti-cancer therapies.

I synthesised a variety of “High Impact Aroma Chemicals” (HIAC's) such as thiols, pyridines and esters in the laboratory, then purified the products by a range of different distillation techniques, developing and optimising the conditions to achieve the best possible yields and product purities. I then supervised the laboratory processes when then scaled up in the kilo-lab, and ultimately onto the main processing plant.

Second 18-month spell of post-doctoral research carrying out fluorinations on the soccer ball shaped allotrope of carbon, Buckminsterfullerene, less than 2 years after it was isolated in gram quantities. I used a wide range of fluorinating agents such as xenon difluoride, bromine pentafluoride, inorganic fluorinating agents (such as antimony and osmium fluorides) and fluorine itself. Work was supervised by Professors John Holloway and Eric Hope.

First 18-month spell of post-doctoral research (started before my PhD was submitted in November 1993) researching and developing a range of novel perfluoro-alkylated dyestuffs suitable for imparting chemical impermeability to cotton cloth. This novel, but highly successful work was funded by the Ministry of Defence CBDE (Porton Down).
