Synthesis of Campaign 1 material and project intermediates.Acted as the Chemistry contact to influence synthetic chemistry route design for Oncology/ Diabetes project.Synthesis and route design of novel compounds for biological evaluation (from 1mL to 50L scale).Achievements included:• Delivery of 350 g of final material to agreed formulated timelines using a range of reactors from 1L to 50 L.• Altered a campaign route to avoid isolation of a problematic iodo intermediate, conditions were modified to increase the yield from 14% to 90%, published in AZ abstracts.• Excellent collaboration with discovery chemists, worked flexibly to ensure delivery of a 20 g batch 6 weeks early for a critical tox slot. This involved good decision making as a team (democratic, fast, decisive and covering all the options).• Worked effectively with the Diabetes team giving regular progress updates, advising on best conditions for scale up and inputting options identified through the Large Scale team as alternative routes.• Showed passion for customers by identifying final compounds and an intermediate for a Diabetes project which was then synthesised in the Large Scale lab.• Facilitated smooth transfer of an Oncology project to Campaign 2 team by sharing learning from Campaign 1 synthesis and provision of several key intermediates and starting materials.• Acquired a working knowledge of pressure hydrogenation, blast cells, large scale microwave, Differential scanning calorimetry and the 5kg Novasep system for column chromatography.

Responsibilities included:Synthesis and route design of novel compounds for biological evaluation.Safety rep for the chemistry department.Achievements included:• Demonstrated effective reaction planning, good team working and problem solving resulting in a good number of successful syntheses.• Rationalised formation of a novel byproduct of an oxetane rearrangement after isolation and characterisation.• Developed an oxadiazole synthesis for a project, improving a key reaction of a guanidine formation from 40% to 90%.• Developed a robust process enabling the rapid synthesis of 85/110 ureas after parallel chromatography and synthesis including the use of phase transfer tubes and genevac.• Good problem solving and reaction planning in synthesising complex spiro cyclic molecules. Also contributed ideas to help solve problems for colleagues.• Developed people by promoting the use of large scale kit (LARA reactor) and mentored several people using the equipment.• Safely supervised a demanding summer student without impact on own productivity.• Demonstrated commitment to personal development by going out of comfort zone to attend and verbally feedback on an external symposium. Also had a week in the large scale lab to make 2 crucial intermediates.• Took a lead in the lean sigma project around storage of project intermediates.
