I run my own independent consultancy business undertaking incident investigations and providing risk management advice to the transport sector. I specialise in highway maintenance, collision reconstruction, meteorology and micro-climatology matters. I also conduct related research and am Technical Advisor to the National Winter Service Research Group, a technical sub-group of the UK Roads Board. Before starting my own consultancy business in June 2005, I was Head of the UK Transport Research Laboratory’s Investigations and Risk Management Department and a member of TRL’s Executive Management Committee. Prior to joining TRL, I was an Associate within a major multi-national transport, engineering and environmental consultancy group and previously I was a Principal Research Assistant at University College, Swansea undertaking research into the effects of the weather on road safety.I have investigated and attended the scenes of numerous road traffic collisions, and am frequently commissioned in an Expert capacity to undertake forensic investigations into such incidents. I have therefore provided written and oral evidence at Coroners’ Inquests, Criminal Trials and Courts considering Civil Actions. I have also led teams investigating major rail crashes, attending the scenes and subsequently providing evidence to the Railway Safety Commission, the Coroner and Court considering the causes of the incidents. In addition, I investigate weather and micro-climatological issues relating to non-transport related incidents.I have provided strategic and technical input to a number of national highway maintenance standards and Codes of Practice, and I have authored approximately 35 published papers.I train the Police, highway authority personnel and members of the insurance and legal professions in my specialisms, and I regularly present technical papers at conferences and symposia by invitation.Specialties: Collision Investigation, Applied Research, Transport Risk Management, Highway Maintenance Consultancy, Meteorological & Micro-Climatological Assessment
