My 30 year career started with a small, family run brokerage in my hometown of Weston-Super-Mare. This was back in the days of insurer rating guides, pre-carbonated cover note books, floppy disc’s & insurer names that have either rebranded, merged or fell by the wayside. This was supposed to be a “this will do until I decide what I really want to do” job, what I didn’t know at the time is that once you’re in it, you’re in it for life. 7 years later I joined Cornhill (as it was then) as a Commercial Underwriter & quickly found my niche as a Motor Trade specialist. This is where I really got the bug for our industry & started to realise my potential for building lasting relationships with brokers..I found that brokers were submitting enquiries to me because of our “relationships”.One of those relationships secured me a job and a relocation to a wholesale & schemes broker in Witney. I was underwriting Motor Trade, Courier, Property & SME schemes while further developing the skills to interact with insurers and my brokers to ensure the best possible outcome for everyone. This continued when we were acquired by a specialist broker until our office was closed and we could either relocate or take redundancy. I took redundancy & I held out for my dream job of becoming a BDM, this is what I felt my true calling was and I was determined to convince someone to see beyond the underwriting background. Thankfully, after 6 months of searching, County Insurance could see the potential and benefit of a BDM for their Thatch Scheme, and I can’t thank them enough for taking that leap of faith. The role meant I could combine my underwriting knowledge, desire for personal growth and genuine interest to help my brokers to succeed. As a result, we saw the account grow from £700K to £4million (GWP). I also took an interest in the marketing side of things and I quickly developed my own style of newsletters, marketing material and launching & updating the Facebook and Twitter pages.After 7 years with County I got the “itch”, it was time for new challenge & what better way than to join an MGA with a very strong e-trade background. And so iprism opened its’ doors & my eyes to the MGA, e-trade and the joys of traveling to London once a month. Again, I met some wonderful individuals, friends & a mentor who has helped me to unlock techniques and evolve further (thanks Kris).And here I am today looking for my next challenge, to grow, to learn, to improve so I can be the best BDM that I can because in this industry you’re in it for life & I’m loving every minute of it.
