This subject draws on interdisciplinary scholarship to consider contemporary and historical responses to a range of differently experienced crises across the world. It asks: why have communities organised in the ways that they have and at the times that they have? What social norms, assumptions, and practices have they sought to challenge? How do ordinary people respond to crisis moments in ways that are both radical and mundane?

While ethnography as method is the most distinguishing feature of anthropology, ethnographic practice has always taken place in continual conversation with theory. This subject is an eight week research intensive for graduate anthropology (honours) students. Its purpose is to guide students through the development of their research projects by exposing them to a selection of key ethnographers and anthropological theorists.
