I'm fascinated by the human brain's propensity to create and latch onto stories. Give a person five random events and they'll immediately look for the thread that links them. Narratives are how we learn, how we understand the world. They're the default neurological unit of our mind. So is it any wonder that they're critical for any business or organisation that wants to engage with its audiences.For 30 years, I've been creating compelling narratives that help organisations achieve their objectives. It's not called 'a success story' for nothing. Our brains have evolved to think of the world in terms of a coherent, linear narrative. It's why memory experts use narratives to enhance their ability to recall huge lists of numbers or playing cards. A brand without a story is an abstract concept -- its has no power, no emotional resonance. It's just colours and fonts. Today, the creation of a powerful core narrative is at the heart of what we do. Supporting that narrative are a range of communication activities, each of which serves its own purpose but also reinforces the central story: the innovative start-up headed for a sale; the long-established insurer shaking off the legacy of the past; the merger creating a new breed of law firm. Once created, these narratives must also be defended. Vigorously. That narrative is also pivotal in attracting the right kind of journalistic interest. Organisations with a story to tell are much more compelling to the media than products and services. It's a 'news story', after all.
