Rossmoor is a community of 7000 homes located on 1800 acres about 20 miles east of San Francisco. As Chair of Residential Solar I advocate for increased use of solar power throughout our community. Because of the instability of electrical power in Northern California (wildfires, PG&E bankruptcy), I have also become an advocate for microgrids to improve the stability and resiliency of the electrical supply for our 10,000 residents.

I am continuing my PhD research into the ethics and practice of end-of-life decision-making when the patient is decisionally incapacitated.I am currently engaged in a research project with Canadian colleagues. Our objective is to design a protocol for advance requests for medical assistance in dying (MAID) by patients who have been diagnosed with incipient dementia but who are still competent to make decisions about their future treatment after they lose decision-making capacity.

Neuroethics Canada is an interdisciplinary research group investigating the ethical, legal, economic, and social implications of frontier technological developments in the neurosciences. My PhD research examines the decision factors important to surrogates, whether those factors are reflected in surrogate-physician interactions, and the evolution of bioethical thought on surrogate decision-making over the past 40 years. I combine these qualitative metasyntheses into proposed changes to the current paradigm for surrogate decision-making.
