I am currently working with a great team to create a global tech business, CrescoNET, that is focused on digital services for energy and water utilities. The focus is on adopting the latest IoT, edge apps and cloud services to maximise the value and connectivity of customer facing assets. Our aim is to partner with utilities around the world to address the big challenges of climate, technology disruption and water scarcity whilst making future-proofed capital investment decisions. Our solutions are well proven and we are proud of the the ongoing partnership with the Intellihub Group across Australia and New Zealand that continues to demonstrate our capabilities.I have 20+ years in the energy sector, specifically in Australia, New Zealand and across the Asian region.I led the Intellihub business as it has grown into a provider of choice for utilities in Australia and New Zealand. Prior to this I held senior roles at Landis+Gyr as CEO of Australia, New Zealand and South East Asian businesses and before that was the Chief Technology Officer at Ausgrid.

My goal was to oversee a transition for the business which keeps ahead of market reform in energy and the advances in new technologies such as telecommunications, battery storage and data analytics.     I was responsible to establish and then continue to develop the Landis+Gyr business across Asia Pacific in the areas of smart grid, smart metering solutions and services. During my period in this role I successfully developed a business case and strategy for these business areas that was approved by the Landis+Gyr Executive and Board.I subsequently put in place the foundations to deliver these business capabilities and led a number of highly complex and strategic solution sales initiatives. I successfully developed a new team and been responsible for changing the business culture.This resulted in winning and rolling out a showpiece IoT and smart metering platform rollout across Hong Kong, a major data solution for each of the utilities in Vietnam and business development in Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore.

    Responsible for Ausgrid’s critical ICT systems such as SCADA, DMS and organisation voice, data and security services. I have rolled out a program to improve people, process and tools for this area mapped against the ITIL framework. This has resulted in measured improvements in performance.Reduced the forecast operational budget for 2012/13 from $37 million to $25 million through a range of cost saving measures. This has included streamlining key activities and a bottom up evaluation with each member of my management team.Developed technology roadmaps, capabilities and their respective business cases that will be an ongoing set of tools for Ausgrid to run the business. These are being used to underpin the company’s submission for technology investment in the 2014-19 regulatory control period.Continued the implementation, and in many cases completion, of major projects such as Smart Grid, Smart City, firewall replacement, 4G network rollout and distribution automation.

    Responsible for the development and successful winning proposal for the Australian Government’s Smart Grid, Smart City initiative launched by the Prime Minister of Australia in October 2010. This is Australia’s first end to end smart grid development project and will demonstrate on a commercial scale a number of world first activities to transform the electricity industry. It is worth $600 million, including a $100 million Australian Government grant, and has been deployed over three years.I led a team of over 170 staff. In addition there are around approximately 300 further staff contributing to the program in a part time capacity as it involves many facets of the organisation.Negotiated consortium partnership agreements with AGL, TRUenergy, IBM and General Electric. Further partnerships on the project with the NBN Co, TransGrid, Sydney Water, Hunter Water and local councils.Implemented a program office, governance, strategic planning, initial infrastructure build and communications and stakeholder management elements of the project since the signing of the Funding Agreement in October 2010.

    Developed and then responsible for the delivery of EnergyAustralia’s smart grid program. This is a technology program that is focused on changing current business practises to facilitate smarter, customer focused energy services. This program has been internationally recognised; in the top 5% of global utilities on the Carnegie Mellon Smart Grid Maturity Model, Australia’s most advanced smart grid program (award of the Smart Grid, Smart City tender) and the winner of the Asia Pacific T&D Best Company of the Year 2010 for the delivery of Smart Grids (awarded by the New Economy).After the creation of the strategy I have been responsible for growing the team to over 100 staff over a 3 year period and delivering to date over $280 million of investment in new technology programs. The program’s success is the result of leading a highly skilled and motivated team over a sustained period of time.Awarded a Finalist in 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards by the Sydney Division of Engineers Australia for the Distribution Monitoring & Control project in the category of Communications & Control Systems.Developed and managed strategic partnerships with major technology vendors (IBM - $42 million) and developed new innovative products by identifying pioneering innovative companies to take forward products ($50 million PowerSense, GridNet).Established a $10 million research program, the EnergyAustralia Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Utility Networks with the University of Sydney and University of Newcastle. Created an Australian first executive training course with the assistance of IBM and University of Sydney focused on smart grid skills.Areas of responsibility included: distribution automation, smart metering (AMI development), System IT strategy and outcomes, transmission enhancement program (adoption of IEC61850 standard) and solving the problem of last mile telecommunications for an intelligent network.
