Retired as Chair of the annual World Conference on Disaster Management (WCDM) in July 2014.I also held the position of President/CEO of the Canadian Centre for Emergency Preparedness (CCEP) and retired in 2010 after 13 years. Most of my understanding of what constitutes business continuity and emergency / crisis management has been gained from the wide network of contacts around the world who have invested their time, energy and knowledge to speak at WCDM. To all of them I am deeply indebted for so willingly sharing their experiences, their knowledge and expertise and especially for their friendship.My multifarious career has taken me around the world working in senior executive positions in both for-profit and non-profit sectors in Hong Kong, Nepal and of course Canada. After serving with Britain's Brigade of Gurkhas in Hong Kong during the turmoil of China's Cultural Revolution I moved back to Nepal to administer a resettlement program for retired Gurkhas and later got first hand experience in high altitude disaster recovery in the Himalaya. In 1976 I joined the (then) "Royal" Hong Kong Jockey Club to manage their membership of 10,000 and some years later took over the HK School of Motoring before moving to Canada with my family in 1989. It have to say that I have never had a clear notion what I wanted to do but made commitments whenever challenging opportunities came my way. Since 1967 I have gained experience in leadership, strategic planning, change management, and business and non-profit turnarounds as well as championing an international, holistic understanding of disaster management. I continue to maintain an interest in emergency management especially with regard to climate change adaptation and mitigation as well as helping to support charities and non profit organizations active in Nepal.
