The Institute for Apprenticeships is an executive, non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Education.The Route Panels are made up of industry experts and are responsible for setting the standards of knowledge, skills and behaviours needed by employers for every occupation in England. As Vice Chair, I lead the Digital Route Panel in reviewing and recommending apprenticeship standards and assessment plans and advising on funding levels on behalf of the Institute.

In November 2015 I was given the opportunity to head our cellular network strategy, programmes & business planning alongside my role as CTO of O2 Wifi. As part of the role I am responsible for:- The development of the Network Long Term Strategy Plan with a minimum 5-10 year planning horizon, supported by each of the Network domains;- I own the Short (1 year) and Medium (3 year) strategic planning process; I drive 1 year QPB, 3YP and 5YP financial planning including OPEX, CAPEX & Organisational management;- Own Network Risk Management;- Lead the Programme Management Office with delivery of all major Networks projects and programs; - Ownership of UK property strategy covering 24 switch sites and data centres across the UK, including IT;- E2E network development and transformation plans - Run the central commercial strategy team for Networks- Work closely on financial planning, procurement and initiatives with Group CTO.

I am one of the Founders of O2 Wifi a corporate start-up, and specifically tasked with all technical, operational and delivery responsibilities.As CTO at O2 Wifi I have successfully deigned, built and delivered a market changing wifi proposition in the UK. I have continually and successfully managed to evolve the wifi architecture as we have rapidly scaled over the last 6 years. Managing this transition has been critical to the success of O2 Wifi whilst trying to significantly reduce the risk and exposure to O2 as we have evolved. From our initial single rack, single data centre architecture, we have grown to have a private cloud across mulitple data centres utilising a multiple pop MPLS network. 90% of the systems are virtualised meaning we are now able to scale faster and offer enhanced resiliency for our venue partners. O2 Wifi was developed outside of the core business; after a three-year period O2 Wifi was integrated back into the business within the Networks team at O2, integrating services into the cellular core. In six years, O2 Wifi has grown from a founding team of 4 to over 100 professionals, working with many of the UK’s leading brands including McDonalds, Costa, Mitchells & Butler, Subway, House of Fraser, Hackett, Waitrose, Toni & Guy, Debenhams, Manchester City, The O2, RFU Twickenham, and many more. Over 21 million customers have registered to use O2 Wifi (May'16) and this as we extend our O2 Wifi Extra service, making O2 Wifi a bearer alongside 2G, 3G, 4G #234W, allowing automatic and secure access for O2 customers.

I provide mentoring support to young people with a viable business idea. This role is about guidance and helping young people to develop their businesses whilst also building their confidence and skills. It involves helping young people to find and translate information, understand problems, identify solutions and implement action plans.

BOZII Ltd was acquired by FTSE AIM listed FREEDOM4 Group Plc (previously known as Pipex Group Plc) in April 2008. I continued to work as CTO and reported directly to the Group CEO. I managed a number of projects to increase the company’s capabilities, scalability and resilience, including adding 3G to the well developed WiFi offering to create best connected services for laptop users. Implementing a secondary data centre for redundancy and failover with fibre backbone between sites; as part of this project I introduced blade server implementations to replace existing rack servers and to make economical use of existing data centre space. I also increased the WiFi footprint from 40,000 hotspots in 2008 to 80,000 hotspots 2010.Successes:- ISPA Award Winner for Best Mobile Broadband in 2010 for our innovative Best Connected service, overcoming tough competition from O2, Orange and Vodafone- ISPA Award Winner for Best Business Mobile Broadband in 2009 for our innovative Best Connected service, overcoming tough competition from both Orange and Vodafone- Doubled WiFi footprint- Development of Best Connected WiFi 3G Software- Data centre efficiencies - New data centre deployment- 3G integration- MVNO negotiations

I was the co-founder of BOZII, the largest European Wireless aggregator. BOZII aggregated WiFi hotspot operators to allow users with a single username account to gain access to their hotspots and receive just one bill for their usage. I was responsible for designing the aggregation core, negotiating and implementing new network interconnects with WiFi operators globally, where BOZII was the first wholesale customer of BT Openzone’s service. I was jointly involved with the fund raising and business planning of the business as well as signing-up the first customers. Successes:- ISPA Awards, commended for Best Mobile Broadband in 2008 - Won International individual achievement award in 2008 for my work in wireless broadband, voted for by the industry in a public vote- The largest European WiFi aggregator from 2004 to 2008- BT Openzone’s first wholesale customer- Gained access to 40,000 hotspots globally

I was responsible for all IT and IT based projects for the UK and Spain. I had responsibility for the operation for their network infrastructure, organised satellite connections and configurations to their UK office. I was involved in the design and the creation of Spain’s first network based inbound telephony statistics package; this was primarily used by large call centres, credit card companies, airlines and the travel industry. I worked closely with UK based telcos Opal Telecom and Totem Communications and a Spanish telco, Xtra Telecom, which was acquired by The Carphone Warehouse. At my time at Elitetele.com profits more than doubled and Elite became a Sunday Times 100 tech track company.Successes:- The design and the creation of Spain’s first network based inbound telephony statistics package - Rationalising the IT infrastructure and implementing Microsoft Server- Management of internal IT for the UK and Spain
