About Adrian Kaehler, Ph.D.

I was part of the team that developed the very first self-driving car that won the DARPA-sponsored competition, which later became Google Waymo. The code we wrote inspired the creation of countless other self-driving companies. Two of my most popular books, Computer Vision and Learning OpenCV, have been translated into multiple languages around the world. As a long-time researcher and practitioner in computer vision and AI, with a Ph.D. in particle physics from Columbia University, I have also been an entrepreneur, founder, and executive leader in large institutions. Building institutions from foundation to completion is a passion of mine, and so is serving as an advisor to other large and small companies. I also advise the government in military and intelligence affairs. I went to college at 14 to stimulate my fascination with physics, computer science, and building robots. I went on to earn a Ph.D. in particle physics and built the fastest computer in the world at Columbia University. I am the founder and ex-CEO of Giant.Ai, a company that solves one of the most important problems in the world – a rapidly aging workforce – by creating humanoid robots that can do a variety of tasks, especially on manufacturing lines. Inside is a new groundbreaking AI that was developed by myself and the Giant team.

  • Robotics Actual
    Founder And Ceo
    Robotics Actual 2016 - 2017
Robotics Actual was acquired in 2017. The exit allowed me to start my next project, Giant AI.
  • Magic Leap, Inc.
    Vice President, Core Software
Magic Leap, Inc. Nov 2013 - Jun 2016
    Plantation, Florida, Us
During my time at Magic Leap, I was the head of software for the device from the very first software team of six through the first $1.5Bn in capital raised. This role involved both leadership and execution in the very early days, including personally writing the backbone for the core software of the system. As the company grew, the executive aspect of the role became my primary responsibility. Later, I took over our Special Projects group, which oversaw technological research and business investigations into potential high value alternatives or additions to the plan of record project. Among other things, we were very early adopters of deep learning technology, a technology that now, only a few years later, has become ubiquitous.I left the company in 2016, moving on to my own independent projects.
  • Applied Minds Incorporated
    Vice President, Senior Scientist
Applied Minds Incorporated Jul 2006 - Nov 2013
At Applied Minds I was a Vice President and the Senior Scientist. My work ranged across an exceptionally broad range of fields and problems. My responsibilities included the creation of new private, as well as government, business, but it was the execution phase of my projects which fed my passion for solving difficult problems and creating innovation. In my role at the company, I functioned both as a technical visionary and a problem solver, as well as providing leadership, organization, and focusing my teams to their goals.Much of my work was focused on robotics and unmanned systems. In this context I applied both my own mathematical and practical software and scientific skills to the development of actual real world systems, as well as the development of ancillary technologies which enabled robotic and unmanned systems as practical solutions to real world problems.
  • Stanford University
    Visiting Researcher
    Stanford University Jan 2006 - Dec 2008
    Stanford, Ca, Us
During this time I worked on self driving vehicle technology with Prof. Sebastian Thrun and, later, dexterous manipulation with Prof. Andrew Ng. The self driving technology led to Stanford's winning entry in the DARPA Grand Challenge (prize was $2M, donated to Stanford University). The dexterous manipulation technology went on to seed the work of Willow Garage on the PR-2 and ROS robot operating system, now a broadly used foundation in robotics research and development worldwide.
  • Intel Corporation
    Sr. Staff Engineer
    Intel Corporation Oct 1998 - Jul 2006
    Santa Clara, California, Us
My work at Intel covered many different topics. I did extensive work in the modeling of physical effects which exist at VLSI fabrication scales, but also did a great deal of work in technologies which would automate the design and fabrication of microcircuits. I also did work at Intel in computer vision, and it was while OpenCV was at Intel that I began work on my first book: Learning OpenCV (now available from O'Reilly Media).
  • Columbia University In The City Of New York
    Rabi Scholars Program
Columbia University In The City Of New York Jan 1994 - Dec 1998
    New York, Ny, Us
Taught theoretical physics for the Rabi Scholars program at Columbia University from 1994-1998. In this capacity I gave university level lectures on advanced theoretical topics, my quantum field theory course being one of the most sought after classes in the program.
  • Columbia University In The City Of New York
    Graduate Research Associate
Columbia University In The City Of New York 1992 - 1998
    New York, Ny, Us
During these years I and my team built one of the first Terraflop scaled somputers for the purpose of doing computations in Lattice Gauge Theory, a doman of computational theoretical high energy physics. This computer had 20,000 processors, and approximately one teraflop of computational capacity. I then used this machine to explore, through simulation, topological aspects of gauge field theories such as the strong interactions.
  • Columbia Univeristy
Executive Comittee Of The Graduate School Of Arts And Sciences
    Columbia Univeristy Sep 1996 - Aug 1998
The Executive Committee is the core leadership body of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. At this time, it's members include the Dean and representatives of the GSAS departments. It also included just two elected members of the graduate student community across all GSAS departments. I served as one of those two members during this period. This was a rare and invaluable experience, giving me the opportunity to learn and understand aspects of the operations, finance, and strategic planning of an academic institution.
