With a focus upon stability, high-availability and performance, I have implemented a number of architectural changes that modernises our cloud stack, reduces management complexity, and allows for higher velocity to grow as the needs of other teams shift into new areas.Major accomplishments include but are not limited to:- Replaced ageing load-balancer technologies such as Microsoft TMG and ARR with a high-performant and highly available HAProxy-based solution. This allowed for zero downtime changes, further automation of TLS certificate lifecycle management, and opened up API and socket integration with a number of other internal DevOps tooling.- Championed the adoption of Ansible as a standardised technology across the team, allowing the team to more rapidly convert a number of outstanding manual tasks into playbooks and remove outstanding error-prone human elements from these processes.- Overall management of maintenance tasks required to maintain desired level of reliability and performance across all system infrastructure, creating and actioning plans as necessary and in an automated manner where possible.- Coordinated the design and procurement of all equipment required for a new data centre facility in Dublin, Ireland so as to meet the compliance requirements of our customer base within Europe. My personal goal within this role focused on simplifying IT management complexity, increasing automation, and drastically improving real-world performance and reliability where it counts most - in the classrooms.Some of these solutions included:- Zero down-time upgrade of the internal 1Gbps copper-based network to highly available 10Gbps fiber networking and switching infrastructure, capable of providing and future-proofing against the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth over the wireless network.- Replacement of all standalone server infrastructure with a highly available Hyper-V cluster including distributed storage, repurposing old equipment in a secondary location as a DR site. - Upgraded (or rebuilt where necessary) all supporting infrastructure from Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2016 to ensure maximum uptime of external services and dramatically increase automation capabilities.- Implemented Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager to automate the management of OS updates, application deployment, VPN configuration, asset management, SOE deployment, anti-virus heuristic analysis, and more for just under 5000 devices across two sites.- Created and deployed scripts that proactively monitor staff notebooks, automatically logging warranty calls with manufacturers if health metrics such as battery health or temperature sensors exceeded thresholds.
