I started my research carrier working on the development of a massively parallel supercomputer for Lattice Gauge Theories calculations in a theorist group (Universities of Pisa and Roma). After completing my PhD (1992), I turned to experimental particle physics, where I worked on the conception and construction of detectors, with special emphasis on the design of complex electronics systems. My main activity has been within international collaborations in experiments realized at CERN.Since the late 90s, I have been involved in several national and international research and development projects, aimed at the conception and/or application of innovative experimental techniques (see the "Projects" Section for some details), covering various roles of responsibilities.Presently, I work in particular on the development of innovative radiation sensors and related electronics (photons and charged particles), being capable of very high time resolution (in the range of 10 to 1 ps). In the last years, this interest has led to the conception and implementation of national-funded and international-funded research projects (TimeSPOT, ATTRACT-EU-INSTANT, OPTIME – some details are given below). I am presently the Principal Investigator and national coordinator of the IGNITE initiative, which sees the participation of 14 research sites (INFN and University) and almost 80 researchers.
