Found ways to significantly reduce Opex spend for 7 power stations; when the income from selling wholesale power into Alberta’s grid had been impacted by prices that were at an all-time low: • Operations headcount was reduced, centralized leased warehouse closed, and parts moved to sites.• All Ops staff were site based and up skilled to mechanics with most maintenance brought in-house; • Ops provided remote diagnostic assistance to Client-operated peaking sites. • Operations management services were sold to a 3rd party client as an extra income source.• Lean techniques were applied to back-office systems then Operations absorbed them (Procurement, Client invoicing, Reporting, PLC support), allowing company back-office headcount to reduce.• Site power demands were reduced, and SCADA systems modified to supply more efficiency data.• Operator manual handling tasks were improved by adding tailored heavy lifting systems to each site.

Bantrel supplied EPC services to Conoco Philips on their c$8bn Surmont 2 oilsands project. I was responsible for the cost and timeline for Electrical engineering deliverables. The team and I overcame several obstacles and made up time, working positively with the Client and achieving bonusable milestones.• Worked with vendors of c$220m of buildings and electrical equipment, managing Change Orders, undertaking walk-downs and overseeing the cloning of well-pad drawings.• Re-designed the Cable Management Program to reduce on-site waste, improve efficiency and built the tracking and reel assignment program for over 40,000 cables.• Supported electrical Superintendents with supply chain and quality issues as an on-site engineer.

• Set up the first Regional office of Energy Solutions in Manchester and attracted new Clients.• Became an accredited consultant with Carbon Trust as a specialist in biomass and cogeneration.• Led and was part of federated teams on many power projects including solar, wind and EfW.• Undertook a strategic review and 10-day viability trial of a partially built district heat and power scheme fired by a wood chip gasifier. • Created niche markets for increasing power station efficiencies; complex invoicing audits with PPA reviews (1 Client saving over $11M, another avoiding prosecution due to wrongly calculated combustion emissions calculations.) and “Industry-first” Power, biomass and maintenance agreement negotiations for Clients.

With an open remit to save money associated with energy I :• Created UU’s first Energy Policy and Action Plan that focused on energy reduction and decarbonizing facilities by requiring design standards to minimize lifecycle energy use.• Created enhanced liquidity commodity trading contracts for electricity and “shrinkage gas”• Wrote water-industry first “Risk and Governance” documents• Created daily “Value-at-Risk strategy documents” so the CFO could pre-authorize significant commodity purchases if market triggers were reached.• Took over renewable power generation technicians and assets as an "incubator project" (21 biogas cogen, 7 hydro) - Added an experienced cogen manager, optimized power & doubled income. - Changed the company narrative so that “biomethane” became the asset to be maximized. - Created modelling & optimum multi-engine combination selection tool for Engineering - Had a $39m business case with 3-year payback authorized for fast-tracking by UU’s Managing Director. - Created outline designs for new cogen & hydro, & commissioned new units, optimized gas availability by reviewing upstream assets & created digester temperature tracking tool. - Purchased “bargain” priced high efficiency engines to replace mature units at UU’s largest wastewater treatment works, doubling their output. - Improved cogen control & data systems to best-in-class with 3rd party control systems.• Undertook Energy audits of schools & other technical support for UU Energy Solutions bids.• Led research into drop-in biofuels for standby diesel engines & biogas impurities removal• Created an industry-first “shrinkage gas” management contract for a group company in 5 weeks.• Applied Lean techniques to routine departmental reporting & bill validation, reducing labour needs by 50%, and re-directed to supporting renewable generation, energy saving projects & on-line reporting tools for internal Clients.
