About Adrian Vickery Hill

I'm a director and co-founder of the Osmos Network, a creative agency guiding organisations and communities, small and large, in sustainable change. I have expertise in design which is research based, human-centred, collaborative, service oriented and process driven. I enjoy collaborating on meaningful small and large projects, within multi-disciplinary teams, particularly focused across Europe.I have over two decades of experience in both digital and physical world projects at the intersection of economic development, resource management and place. In the past I've worked across a range of topics including urban sustainability, mobility, agriculture, community participation, eco-systems management, renewable energy production, urban development, manufacturing and material cycles. I've collaborated closely with universities and research agencies, and held positions at TU Delft and the Université Libre de Bruxelles. I've co-authored academic papers, journal articles, book chapters, guides and edited a book on urban manufacturing (Foundries of the Future, 2020).Don't hesitate to say hello - especially if interested in collaboration, mentoring and support or simply to chat about any of the above.

  • Osmos Network
    Partner
Osmos Network May 2015 - Present
Brussels Area, Belgium / Europe Wide.
OSMOS is an empowerment service for organisations and communities in transition. We help public authorities, civil society organisations, elected officials, businesses and technicians to arrive at a common vision of what a local sustainable economy could look like in their specific socio-economic, geographical and cultural context. We also give advice on the strategies that will be necessary to transition towards a place-based economic system that puts community values and healthy ecosystems at the top of its agenda.
  • Université Libre De Bruxelles
    Project Coordinator & Visiting Researcher
Université Libre De Bruxelles Jul 2018 - Present
    Brussels Area, Belgium
Developing a business oriented platform in the inter-regional Buda precinct on resource, space and skills sharing.
  • Latitude,Platform For Urban Research And Design
    Project Coordinator
Latitude,Platform For Urban Research And Design Apr 2017 - Present
    Brussels Area, Belgium
Project Coordinator for the JPI Urban Europe funded ENSUF project 'Cities of Making', Latitude with BECI, ULB/VUB, UC London, The RSA + TU Delft. The project delves into opportunities for strengthening urban based manufacturing in European cities following years of decline and offshoring. Using a combination of strategic and action research, our ambition is to identify what works in supporting a resilient and innovative industrial base, and to test those solutions in a real-world setting. We will learn from experiences in London, Rotterdam and Brussels – each with a distinct industrial heritage. By the end of the project we will have developed ideas, practices and policies focusing on public authorities (and many other relevant stakeholders) to breathe new life into their manufacturing communities.
  • Planning + Research
    Freelance Planner And Researcher
    Planning + Research Jan 2012 - Present
    Brussels Area, Belgium
  • Buur
    Collaborator
    Buur Apr 2012 - Apr 2017
    Leuven
How can we tell if urban planning decisions are (more) sustainable? Project themes consist of: mobility, density studies, complex planning sites, communications strategies and so on. More specifically, I assisted in developing a 'Resilience Framework' for the JPB Foundation (http://jpbfoundation.org) in New York, a high profile financial endowment with ShiftN (BE). I co-developed a video for the European Commission on urban mobility with story-tellers Jack in the Box. Over the last few years I have developed an 'urban scale sustainability compass' - an analysis and decision making tool for urban planning and design (www.sustainabilitycompass.eu).
  • Achacha Fruit Group
    Various Roles
Achacha Fruit Group Jan 2008 - Feb 2017
    Australia
The food industry is a challenging nut to crack, especially from a growers perspective. How can a relatively 'new' fruit slip into the market on a shoestring budget? How can the gap between consumers and producers be reduced? Achacha is a family run biodynamic plantation growing a tropical fruit (Garcinia humulis - known in Bolivia as the Achaicharu) originating from the Amazon rainforest in Bolivia.
  • Tu Delft
    Kwh/M2 - Energy And Landscape
    Tu Delft Aug 2011 - Jan 2014
    Delft
What will be the environmental consequences of renewable energy systems? kWh/m2 explored the links between space and energy production within TU Delft (Dirk Sijmons and Andy van den Dobblesteen) and Wageningen University (Sven Stremke) - a cross-disciplinary academic and masters level (one year graduation studio). It included students from architecture, urbanism, landscape architecture, industrial design and architectural engineering). Project responsibilities include student coordination included organising events and presentations, organising and giving tutorials, giving presentations, website and web content, organise site visits and a group excursion through Germany.
  • Tu Delft
    Barcelona: Energy + Urban Form
    Tu Delft Jul 2011 - Jan 2012
What would happen if cities lost cheap energy? Modern cities have been established mostly around plentiful access to cheap energy sources. This study analyses the links between energy consumption and urban form using Barcelona as a case study.
  • Terras Landscape Architecture
    Associate And Landscape Architect
Terras Landscape Architecture Jan 2004 - Dec 2008
    Australia
A range of projects from private commissions to landscape management and large urban planning projects. Clients were varied but ranged from private residences to large private developers, municipalities, state government authorities and institutions. Starting as a graduate landscape architect the role evolved into an associate position and registered landscape architect at the age of 26.
  • Small Places
    Artistic Director
    Small Places 2005 - 2007
    Newcastle, Australia
How can a place change through art or art change the character of a place? Newcastle contains a charming and relatively well preserved CBD except business had deserted the city centre. Small Places was a pilot project for a temporary public art program, focusing on urban regeneration. Responsibilities involve developing program structure, chairing the steering committee, sourcing funding and administering funds, media and marketing, organising film documentation and so forth. Spanish/Australian sculptor, Dani Marti, was eventually selected for the pilot project.
