I build clean, extensible, flexible codebases to make work better.I was looking for a mission that addresses a pressing, worldwide problem head-on. I'm now at Verily, working to deliver the promise of precision health.I'm passionate about optimization - doing things in the best way possible. That has led me to develop both tools that free up resources, and features for customers; in both cases, the need is the same: solve the right problem at the right time, in the right way, correctly. In other words: design-driven, extensible, test-driven development.I'm proud of my liberal arts education, and the skill set it helped me develop: critical thinking, verbal & written communication, and deep interests in varied fields of study.
Listed skills include Python, Physics, Microsoft Office, Public Speaking, and 13 others.

I help design, prototype, validate, and improve the algorithms powering our consumer-facing data-driven products.Projects:- Thermostat line's temperature sensing algorithm: numerical modeling tool. Was: labor-intensive, undocumented, required expert knowledge. Contribution: replaced with thoroughly documented, extensible, flexible library. Enabled: easy regression testing, exploration of new models, handoff to non-experts, application to all product lines.- Microservice to ease development. Problem: tension between apps teams needing to iterate quickly & services team needing stability; frequent (every 1-2 days) breaking changes in internal IDL; QA failures had multiple possible points of origin & no easy way to track down. Contribution: "buffer" microservice that ingested IDL updates as needed by apps, handling subsequent new requests or translating them into a form handleable by service. Enabled: faster apps iteration + stability for services.- Subsequent contributions: stringent suite of smoke tests, helping isolate source of QA failures; a procedure for releasing breaking changes in synchrony across teams.- I'm proud of this work because I was able to interface with several different teams, with often conflicting needs, to provide a solution that helped everyone move faster and with confidence.- Architectural prototype. Problem: Nest Secure exponentially increases state space of Nest ecosystem; behaviors explored in slides but not validated; implementation unclear. Contribution: designed and built a prototype representing apps, devices, & service. Slides converted into executable tests (independent of code); logic flow through components made available as block diagrams. Provided: implementation guide, assurance that behaviors are simultaneously satisfiable.- Extension: designed so prototype components independently replaceable by real counterparts; provides a testing platform where any combination of components can be tested in isolation of others.
I was invited to work full-time at Nest after my summer 2014 internship. I begin in the summer of 2015.
During my internship at Nest, my primary project was spearheading the Python prototyping of a new data-driven user product. I:- Developed, implemented, and evaluated mathematical models of real-world data, becoming highly proficient with the open-source Pandas data analysis library- Employed test-driven development to publish an extensible object-oriented modelingpackage, used within team for prototyping related features- Balanced code development with research-style exploration of results and data.Throughout this process, I used Agile software development principles to meet ambitious schedules through coordination with UI/UX, cloud services, apps, and product marketing teams. I was honored to work with these seasoned teams, and I was proud to be the sole undergraduate member on a cross-product, cross-functional team that prided itself on handling the wide variety of features that is central to the Nest experience.
Women'S Varsity Volleyball
I assist the head coaches in conducting practices, and inform in-game offensive and defensive decisions through live statistics tracking and analysis. I strive to be a welcoming and supportive resource for the team.
Ssx
I investigate fluctuations, turbulence, and magnetic reconnection in plasmas at the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment. The primary question the SSX team currently addresses is "Is the statistical character of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence universal?" We seek to develop analytical statistical tools by which we can compare our own plasma to those of other labs, computer (HiFi) simulations, and solar plasma.Currently we employ a suite of diagnostics: HeNe-laser interferometry, Mach probe, soft x-ray detector, ion Doppler spectroscopy, magnetic (B-dot) probe. I focus on developing (Python) scripts that:-Automate the formatting and presentation of data from the above diagnostics for preliminary analysis-Process salient features from raw data into files amenable to external statistical analysis-Integrate information from multiple diagnostics to identify events of interest (e.g. magnetic reconnection occurring during counter-helicity spheromak merging)I also assist in diagnostic calibration, experiment preparation (Glow Discharge Conditioning, chamber baking) and execution.I presented a poster at the 2013 meeting of the APS DPP on the use of Radial Correlation Functions to extract Magnetic Reynolds Numbers from magnetic probe data. This work received the Outstanding Undergraduate Poster Award.I co-authored two published papers - please see the Publications section below for details.
Mccabe Library
I streamline and manage patron requests for course materials and in-library resources. I assist inter-library resource transfers, maintain proper shelving order to facilitate patron access, and maintain a professional, helpful demeanor throughout.
