About Adriel Meka

Adriel is a Canadian-American illustrator and animator. He was born in Montréal, Québec, Canada, grew up in the states, and graduated with a degree in animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Upon finishing an MFA in animation from the University of Southern California, he has worked at studios such as Nickelodeon, Disney TV, Monkey Paw Productions, and Sony Animation on the hit shows Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Monster High, and Bubble Guppies. Adriel has also become known for directing the animated short film, Camp Kona, and for his published works as an illustrator on the children's books I am A Triathlete, Gary and the Great Inventors, and Kulu the Wise Turtle

    Gary and the Great Inventors: It’s Laundry day is a children’s book written by Akura Marshall. The book itself follows the main character and his brother Isaac as they go on an adventure into Washington DC to learn more about the works of the wise inventors that preceded them. During the duration of the project I worked closely with Akura to provide the every aspect of the visual depiction of the book. This included taking on roles such as Character Designer, Visual Development Artist, Art Director and Book Illustrator in order to take the vision of the book from words on paper to digital paintings. I executed the sketches and iterations of the characters based on descriptions, designs the layouts and storyboards for the narrative and then fleshed out the story into its final visual depictions. The position required me to to research on the style of music and record numerous samples before ultimately using traditional and digital instruments to produce and instrumental background song.

    Catch of the Day is an animated short film created by director Haley Hustus. The premise of the film includes men on an old-timey WWII army boat who find themselves stumbling upon a hungry Siren. My role in this film was to conceptualize and design the main boat that would be used in the film. This included researching reference of WWII ships and exaggerating the proportions in order to better suit the shape language of the 2D film. I was in charge of sketching preliminary designs, rendering a final boat design, exploring color comps, and providing illustrations of close ups of the boat from different angles to aid the layout artists when painting it into the scenes.

    Long Way Down is an animated short film directed by Darren Yaworski. This film and its director have both worked hard to push the limits of student thesis films by incorporating the element of VR. My job on this film was to work on the pre-visualization of the bridge. The theme embodies a noire, 40’s San Francisco mafia mood with a heavily stylized shape look. I needed to work collaboratively with the director and modelers in order to create preliminary sketches for the bridge and some of the designs for the props. These designs were modeled used primarily in the previsualization stages of the production for blocking animation as well as staging for the scenes.
