Pendleton, Oregon

Served as the regional ecologist for the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Provided technical support for implementing forest and range management plans; evaluated the impacts of proposed projects on vegetation, soil, aquatic, and wildlife resources; prepared Environmental Assessments and Biological Evaluations; and identified high priority sites for protection and restoration based on wildlife habitat modeling and field assessments. Developed and implemented noxious weed, grassland, and wildlife habitat management plans. Maintained cooperative relationships with state and federal resource management agencies, landowners, and stakeholders. Also served as the project manager for the 24,200 acre Isqúulktpe Watershed Project, a fish and wildlife mitigation area funded by Bonneville Power Administration. Designed and implemented projects to protect and restore watershed and floodplain processes. Developed annual work plans and budgets; developed and managed subcontracts; completed environmental and cultural permitting (NEPA) requirements; and implemented on-the-ground restoration and habitat improvement projects.

Portland, Oregon

Provided technical expertise in restoration, monitoring, and invasive species management for high priority conservation sites in Oregon grassland, wetland, sagebrush steppe, and forest ecosystems. Developed restoration and weed management plans, implemented on-the-ground restoration projects, managed monitoring programs, and supervised field crews. Major accomplishments included evaluating plant hydrologic requirements to predict the response of wetland vegetation to hydrologic restoration for an Environmental Impact Statement; evaluating ecological attributes and indicators for coastal estuaries; developing restoration plans for 23,000 acres of sagebrush steppe and 1,000 acres of Palouse prairie old fields; leading on-the-ground restoration efforts for 250 acres of sagebrush steppe; developing and managing monitoring programs to evaluate restoration and management effectiveness at four preserves; managing a five-year research project to assess herbicide effectiveness for controlling annual grasses; and characterizing current condition and pre-fire exclusion stand structure and composition in dry forests to inform restoration prescriptions and evaluate restoration success.

Portland, Oregon

Created plant community maps for 86,000 acres of grassland and sagebrush steppe in north-central Oregon. Conducted plant surveys and inventories, mapped plant communities using a handheld computer, created GIS maps, and wrote summary report. Mapped rare plant and weed occurrences in a Palouse prairie.

Flagstaff, Arizona

Designed and implemented research projects in the ecology and restoration of understory plant communities in southwestern ponderosa pine forests. Research topics included: plant and soil recovery on abandoned and rehabilitated forest roads, roadside spread of exotic plants, and the use of soil amendments in native plant revegetation. Supervised crews of 4-6 in data collection and laboratory work; published manuscripts; and collaborated with Forest Service, university, and state officials. Also assisted with forest plot monitoring to evaluate effects of thinning and prescribed burning on forest structure, composition, fuels, and soils.

Corvallis, Oregon

Led field crews to characterize forest stand structure in unmanaged riparian forests in the Siskiyou Mountains. Evaluated avian response to thinning in the Tillamook State Forest by monitoring nest success of native songbirds. Characterized current and potential large woody debris input into streams in unmanaged riparian forests in the Coast Range Mountains.

Assisted with native plant restoration and exotic plant control. Monitored vegetation, propagated and transplanted seedlings, eradicated exotic plants using herbicides and mechanical treatments, and trained volunteers.

Corvallis, Oregon

Researched the long-term effects of fertilization on soil carbon dynamics in managed forests. Collected soil samples, developed protocols for soil processing, and supervised student worker.
