I manage a portfolio of projects focused on low-emissions iron ore processing and green steel production, including the industrial demonstration and commercialisation of CSIRO's Dry Slag Granulation and Self-Sustaining Pyrolysis for metallurgical-grade biochar production. I am also responsible for the delivery of mass and energy balance modelling studies to evaluate the net CO2 emissions associated with the onshore production of various iron ore products in Australia, and their impact on downstream emissions associated with offshore processing in integrated iron and steel plants, for industry and government partners. The Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC), is a collaborative group of industries, researchers, and government organisations seeking to de-risk low-carbon technology pathways to decarbonise the Australian heavy industry.The Process Technologies Program within the HILT CRC aims to demonstrate new technologies unlocking the barriers to the low-carbon transition for Australian iron ore, alumina and cement production.We focus on the integration… Show more The Heavy Industry Low-carbon Transition Cooperative Research Centre (HILT CRC), is a collaborative group of industries, researchers, and government organisations seeking to de-risk low-carbon technology pathways to decarbonise the Australian heavy industry.The Process Technologies Program within the HILT CRC aims to demonstrate new technologies unlocking the barriers to the low-carbon transition for Australian iron ore, alumina and cement production.We focus on the integration of variable and renewable energy sources such as electrification, hydrogen, solar thermal and biomass/waste to produce low-carbon, high value iron products from Pilbara and magnetite ores, and decarbonise the Bayer processe for alumina production (with a focus on steam generation and calcination). We also focus on identifying alternative feeds (such as clay or waste from other heavy industry sectors) that can be incorporated in cements to reduce the use of high carbon components.As the Research co-lead, my role is to engage with industry and academic partners to identify research opportunities, manage the program’s project portfolio, and coordinate the delivery of work, pulling together capabilities across all partners fulfill the aims and milestones of the CRC.
