Cap Program Coordinator,
The Nurturing Parenting Program focuses on offering Primary Prevention Services targeting families and individuals who are at a higher risk of developing problems that can lead to child abuse or neglect. The program will target children ages 0-8 and their caregivers. It is the intent of the program and its activities to provide education that will help families and individuals avoid behaviors and actions that could result in the abuse of a child. By implementing program activities focused on strengthening parenting skills, the Nurturing Parenting Program enables clients to develop healthier parenting practices that will result in strengthening families instead of higher rates of child abuse and neglect. The program activities are designed to help vulnerable parents overcome risk factors most often related to child abuse and neglect. The target population for these services includes families facing poverty, single-parent households, families affected by substance abuse, families with a history of abuse and neglect, and families supported by relative caregivers (i.e. grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.). Through the consistent delivery of parent education opportunities, the program assists the parent in understanding five parenting constructs needed to develop a healthy parent/child relationship. These five constructs are:• Appropriate expectations of children• Developing empathy in parents and children• Discipline with dignity• Self-Awareness and appropriate family roles• Empowerment and independence
