Discovery Shop
CurrentWorking full time in the retail store of a leading science education centre adds unique and enjoyable challenges to the role of retail manager’s assistant.Along with skills required in most retail environments, such as:- Maintaining and managing the shop floor, stock labeling and stock display.- Providing excellent customer service to Scitech visitors and off-the-street customers, both in person and via phone and email enquiries.- Training and supervising new staff and work experience students.- Writing and editing procedure manuals and equipment instruction guides.- Photographing stock for use in marketing.I also get to do the following:- Answering all kinds of science related questions from curious young (and no so young) people.- Communicating the science behind products, how they work and how they relate to scientific principles visitors have encountered inside Scitech itself.- Helping parents to educate their children about money and basic commerce concepts.- Giving students, parents, and teachers ideas about learning resources, fun experiments, and science projects. And then there’s outside the shop:- Stock and carry out basic repairs and maintenance of vending machines.- Balancing and preparing weekly cash and eftpos banking for shop and front of house ticket sales and bookings.- Some science communication inside Scitech as random intercept questions arise.
