When I came to D.C. twenty years ago for law school, I never thought I’d wind up co-founding a group learning platform for parents and caregivers. But the culture of Big Law demanded it – and as my serial entrepreneur mother taught me, if you see a problem, go fix it.My legal career ranged from Am100 law firms Pillsbury and Cooley LLP, to a stint as senior counsel for GridPoint in the wild wild west of the tech startup world, to building a legal team from the ground up at Hewlett Packard. As is the story for so many of us trying to balance a career and caregiving responsibilities, the birth of my daughter changed everything.It wasn’t the identity shift (or matrescence) so many of us experience during the transition to parenthood. It wasn’t the lack of perks at work. I realized I didn’t have the skills or support to adequately care for and advocate for myself while balancing my two demanding jobs, lawyer and mother. Access to and help building those skills and support just didn’t exist in my personal and professional worlds. So, for the first time, I felt like I was failing…and THAT was an incredibly lonely feeling. So I pivoted. I became a leadership coach and worked in talent management for Hogan Lovells. I founded MotherNation, a peer support community for new moms, but realized this too wasn’t enough. It isn’t just mothers being failed by the system. And it’s not an individual problem, but a structural one. It’s about employers creating environments of belonging that are sustainable for whole people – because employees aren’t robots.Enter: Keep Company. One where we don’t feel like we need to choose between our careers and our families. While I'm continuously practicing how to take my own medicine as far as prioritizing personhood (I'm a startup founder - it's a crazy time), I am an avid reader. I have a perpetual New Year's Resolution to read more fiction because nonfiction feels a little too productive.
