In 2000, together with Peter Jacobs, started in Eindhoven what was then called: SILHOUET SOUTH. Peter was in charge and did sales; I took care of the training. We were a great team!The organization grew rapidly and more and more people joined the company. At Stiftlastechniek Nederland BV (now Studco Stud Welding) I was involved with the sales of stud welding equipment and supplies, as well as contracting stud welding projects and supervising the work.The work here was more coarse, blast furnaces of the Hoogovens, petrochemical industry and shipyards – very different from the precision engineering I was used to in my career so far._____________________✪ The most challenging in this position for me was DOING THE SALES MYSELF – acquiring the work on my own. Sales is just not my strongest point and as a technician I felt much more at ease in the execution and implementing the work. Altogether working at Stiftlastechniek Nederland BV was a good training for me, one I did not want to miss.

Setting up and running a production company for stainless steel Carber calcium absorption elements and Sponshine™ cleaning pads, for both the professional and consumer markets.This was the first time for me that I was solely responsible for the OVERALL BUSINESS. Besides engineering – I now also had to deal with finance, marketing and directly managing sales and production people.In this period I learned a lot about MANAGEMENT BY STATISTICS – measuring various business results, putting these in graphs and directing the company from these measured figures in order to control all the vital processes within the organization._____________________✪ Setting up a whole new business was a great game, but I also experienced resistance. Apparently people sometimes did not have the same ideas as me, and not always being able to clearly convey my views was new to me. Sometimes I wondered: “Why don’t they just do what I ask? It isn’t that difficult...” Here, I really became interested in: "What motivates other people?" and "How do you communicate with people?" I then started to follow specialized training regarding this.

At Tekon I mainly delivered FEASIBILITY STUDIES & CONSULTANCY to large international companies such as General Electric Plastics in Bergen op Zoom (now SABIC) and Minox GmbH in Giessen near Wetzlar (Germany)._____________________✪ Experiencing how these large organizations operate, was useful and interesting for me. Especially the precision engineering of the Minox cameras appealed to me, and I would have liked learning more about that.

Elmecon was a very INNOVATIVE and FAST GROWING engineering company – originated from Philips and specialized in the development of unique business mechanization equipment for the connector industry. These machines were made fully on customer specifications, commissioned by international connector manufacturers in Europe and the Far East.Here I was given the opportunity by use of the drawing board to TRANSFORM IDEAS INTO OPERATING MACHINERY. The sting was often in the tail to get everything debugged into a working line._____________________✪ For me as a newly graduated engineer it was an adventure to manage our TEAM of 15 experienced engineers and draughtsmen as Assistant Manager Mechanical Engineering and motivate these creative people – not only to produce quality TECHNICAL DESIGNS – but also meet the HARD DEADLINES.

After graduating from the Technical University Eindhoven – which took place within the PHILIPS CENTRE FOR TECHNOLOGY (now better known in Eindhoven as the old Nat Lab at Strijp-S), Philips has given me the opportunity to put my ideas, about making a high precision bearing, into more concrete form.In a period of 6 months I built a prototype of an apparatus for aligning ball bearings. This made it possible to position even rejected SKF bearings with an ACCURACY A FACTOR 10 HIGHER than the standard construction with use of approved SKF ball bearings._____________________✪ During my graduation period and working at Philips I mainly learned two things:1. ASK specific HELP FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW (in those days you had a top expert in the world for practically every conceivable field at your fingertips in the Philips Nat Lab – the physics laboratories of Philips);2. stick to my OWN IDEAS and persevere to REALIZE them.
