Programme Objectives: - Create a critical mass, multi-disciplinary and industry-oriented research grouping in the area of advanced sensing, communications and informatics. - Create a focused capability in the application of next generation technology solutions for marine and environmental sectors. - Support Researchers to engage with Industry to deliver innovative technology enabled solutions to the global marine sector.The Programme team faciliate focused networking opportunities for Researchers and Industry including an Annual National Workshop on Marine ICT. The Programme has delivered capacity build in marine technology through support of national initiatives including;- Beaufort Award in Marine Sensing and Communications Technology DCU- International SmartOcean Graduate Enterprise Initiative under the IRCSET EPS (DCU, UCC, NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth, UL).- Establishment of SmartBay Ireland as a National Research, Test and Demonstration Facility for Marine & ICT(in association with DCU, NUI Galway, NUI Maynooth, UCD, Marine Institute, IBM, Intel). The facility is currently operated on behalf of its founding partners by SmartBay Ireland Ltd. www.smartbay.ieA key goal of the programme involves supporting the development of a national multi-disciplinary innovation cluster at the interface of the ICT and marine sectors. www.smartocean.orgThe vision is that, by 2020, Ireland will be recognised as a global leader in the development, test and commercialisation of the next-generation of innovative ocean technologies. Products and services will include multi-modal sensor networks, data management, visualisation and forecast providing the basis for intelligent decision based management for the global marine sector.
