Andrew Brennen is a proud Kentuckian who graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and furthered his education at Harvard University with a Master of Education in Education Policy & Management. Andrew’s interest in civil rights law stems from his deep-seated commitment to racial justice, specifically promoting more just and democratic Kentucky public schools. In high school, Andrew co-founded the Kentucky Student Voice Team, which amplifies and elevates students as partners in improving Kentucky schools. Twelve years later, the Kentucky Student Voice Team has grown to include hundreds of members, led multiple successful legislative campaigns, published original, peer-reviewed research, and changed the narrative in Kentucky about the role students can play in improving Kentucky schools. Throughout Andrew’s time in North Carolina, and with the help of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, he served as a defendant-intervenor in the affirmative action case Students for Fair Admission v. University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Today, in addition to serving as a “senior” advisor for strategic litigation to the Kentucky Student Voice Team, he serves as Finance & Audit Chair of the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority and the Kentucky Student Loan Corporation, chair of the Seek Common Ground board of directors, and a member of the Gen-Z For Change board of directors. Andrew is a first-year law student at Columbia University and an NAACP LDF Marshall Motley Scholar.
