Developed state-of-the-art high speed optical measurement techniques combined with advanced high strain rate testing techniques to study the mechanical behavior of novel epoxy based (nano) composites for the development of next generation secondary structures of aircrafts. The developed testing methodologies pushed the Split-Hopkinson bar techniques beyond he state-of-the-art, and revealed new material information which were not possible to reveal using traditional high strain rate testing methodologies. The work was part of the EXTREME Horizon 2020 project.The following has been achieved:- Designing and executing an experimental testing program for novel epoxy based (nano) composites at various static and dynamic loading conditions, and understanding the effect of strain rates, nanoparticle additives, fiber architecture, polymer properties, and fiber/matrix bonding properties on the overall mechanical behavior of the material. Tested materials were: basalt epoxy composites, glass and carbon epoxy composites, novel hyperbranched polyester/RTM6 epoxy, Silica/RTM6 epoxy nanocomposites.- Developing non-standard sample geometries for critical high strain rate tests, with the aid of finite element modeling.- Developing state-of-the-art high speed digital image correlation system for 2D and 3D strain and displacement measurements.- Designing various jigs and setups with tight GD&T for precision sample alignment, preparation, and testing (utilizing 3D CAD).- Effectively communicating the results through various media (technical meetings, workshops, conferences, scientific journals, technical reports), in addition to collaboration with different academic and industrial partners across Europe.- Supervising master thesis students in topics related to optical deformation measurement and high strain rate testing of materials
