This project was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of a multidisciplinary research project between multiple collaborating universities. My role was to develop a sample collection and preparation platform for deployment in the developing world to prepare samples collected from broiler chickens to diagnose pathogenic diseases. Following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the focus of the project shifted to include the preparation of respiratory samples collected from humans. This project proved my ability to adapt to concepts and techniques outside of my initial field of study, particularly in the fields of biology and bioengineering. I designed a low-cost sample preparation platform within strict engineering specifcations, which was optimsed using fluidic, structural and heat transfer simulations, and fabricated using novel 3D printing techniques. During my research, I gained vital laboratory experience during the development of a sample preparation protocol for DNA extraction. Most notably, I proved my time-management skills, able to successfully complete my project while working part-time. Show less
