Experienced British and European Patent Attorney, EPO opposition specialist, and founding owner of Somerville Associates, a regulated British and European patent practice set up with the objective: provision of excellence without the costs and overheads associated with traditional practices. Andrew is experienced at representing mostly US and JP corporate clients in the electromechanical fields and has particular technical and patent-related experience in respect of medical devices, turbochargers and gas turbines, and computer-implemented inventions including 3GPP/LTE standards essential patents. Andrew has developed software to mine insightful patent data from the EPO Patent Register using the EPO Open Patent Services API. This can be useful for patent landscaping and competitor monitoring.Andrew has an M.A./M.Eng. degree in Engineering from Cambridge University, has acquired a Certificate in Intellectual Property Law at Queen Mary, University of London and successfully completed a litigation skills course in London. Andrew is an IMechE Whitworth Scholar and received industrial sponsorship from QinetiQ to undertake his Engineering degree, providing industrial experience in signal processing for medical, radar and aeronautical applications and the opportunity to complete a Master’s thesis in collaboration between QinetiQ and the Cambridge University Engineering department on the detection of wing-tip vortices using LIDAR.Andrew enjoys politics, whisky - being Edinburgh born - and walking his dog in the countryside.
