Gap Years 2003-2005, Summers 2006-2008: Junior Research Scientist, QinetiQ, MalvernAt age seventeen, following competitive interviews/tests, offered place in team that included 18 PhDs and 2 professors and won the (EURASIP) European Group Technical Award (2003) for its pioneering work in radar, sonar, communications and biomedical processing.One of four-member team developing radar system. Responsible for software. Developed program in assembly language for PIC Microchip, responsible for controlling system and establishing interface between system and computer. Software in C++ for acquisition of data, real-time signal processing and graphing of results. Invited to use software to present technology to head of QinetiQ and potential UK customers in 2005. In 2007 expanded software for separate presentation of technology to US customers as part of a multi-million pound bid. Worked in small biomedical team (2003-4) on projects for determining cognitive function (operator state assessment) and separation of (foetal) ECGs due to triplets – believed to be a world first. Dr Mark Smith (technical leader) wrote, “Andrew has adapted extremely well to the research environment. He is frequently mistaken for a graduate… Most recently Andrew has developed a system for the real-time separation of independent signals obtained from hospital EEG recording of brain activity”. This system was also used as part of a customer demonstration and trials at the Burden neurological institute.
