Lecturer In Business Management
CurrentLecturer in Business Management within York Business School. Course Lead for BA (Hons) International Business.
Research Associate
As of March 2021 I am a member of the ESRC-funded SECT:OR project. Involved in the original bid proposal to UKRI's Covid Rapid Response research call, the SECT:OR (Small Enterprises in Covid Times: On Regulation) project is a mixed-methods response to the changing regulatory landscape that small businesses have had to adapt to since March 2020. The aim is to better understand how small businesses encounter, experience, and negotiate regulatory change, so that policy makers can better tailor regulation and guidance to ensure its accessibility to businesses. As part of the project we are designing a large scale survey in conjunction with the FSB, and will then be conducting semi-structured interviews with participants.Prior to 2021, my role involved working for Dr. Fiona Whitehurst on the Captured research project. I was responsible for scoping and developing a systematic review paper on employer-sponsored volunteering, and in 2020 I helped design and conduct a small-scale study looking at small business owners' response to COVID-19. This pilot study served as the basis for the SECT:OR project as initial analysis showed the difficulties small businesses were having negotiating and keeping up with the pace of change in regulation.
Gta/ Tutor
GTA/Tutor on several modules within The York Management School. These include Solving International Management Problems, Behaviour in Organisations, and Qualitative Research Methods. I have taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The work involved planning and delivering seminars to students, and facilitating small-group learning.
Phd Student
My thesis is titled Entrepreneurial Communities of Practice: Community, Inclusion, and Gender in the UK Startup Industry. I completed my thesis in 2018 and successfully defended it with no corrections in November 2018. My research project is an ethnographic study exploring how the work of startup founders and employees is done within a coworking space hosting IT startups and SMEs. Taking an interpretivist approach, I explore processes of community, participation, and gender, in order to better understand who gets included in entrepreneurial communities of practice, and how exclusionary practices work. More broadly, I am interested in demonstrating how inclusion to, and exclusion from, the IT industry, and startup entrepreneurship, is mediated at a communal level, the extent to which this might explain the deficit of female entrepreneurs, and the ways in which non-technical, relational work (done primarily by women) is rendered invisible. My primary research interests are communities of practice, entrepreneurship, innovation, and gender.
