About Andrew Briggs

My experience focuses on optoelectronic engineering research, including device design, growth and fabrication, for innovative solutions in the mid-infrared wavelength range. My PhD research has two distinct thrusts: enhancing mid-infrared emitters with plasmonic materials in a novel all-epitaxial approach and interrogating carrier recombination dynamics of laser material in the mid-infrared to design more efficient light sources. Ultimately, I want to apply my expertise in physics and electrical engineering to develop optoelectronic materials for broad applications.During my PhD, I developed III-V mid-infrared quantum dot devices that have optical powers comparable, and temperature performance far superior, to commercially available devices. This required expertise in sample design, MBE growth, device fabrication, and characterization. I used Matlab to optimize the integration of plasmonic material and to model the electronic properties of my final device design. I have collaborated with scientists from several universities, providing epitaxial material to study carrier recombination and luminescence in quantum well lasers and quantum dot emitters. Along the way, I have authored sixteen journal articles and presented my work at numerous prestigious conferences.
