As the only federal government agency focused exclusively on economic development, EDA plays a critical role in facilitating regional economic development efforts through financial assistance and capacity building to distressed communities. • As the project lead, I was responsible for supervising and coordinating a 12-person team to conduct annual internal audit reviews ensuring programmatic and financial compliance with government grant regulations. In addition, as the audit liaison, I was responsible for facilitating and communicating information requests between external auditors and program offices. This included assisting management with review of and response to audit findings and recommendations. These efforts resulted in increased transparency, and the implementation of stronger internal controls and agency-wide process improvements. • A primary part of my work focused on the annual budget preparation and ongoing budget monitoring. These duties ranged from tracking project pipeline and burn rate to ensure sufficient funding, troubleshooting as issues arose, and developing budget-related briefers, communications materials, and presentations for the Department, Congress, and the public. • I played a key role in the transition of all accounting functions from EDA’s in-house office to a centralized accounting office, a mandate by the Commerce Department. As the pilot agency, my work was recognized as a best practice for implementing similar transitions across the other 12 bureaus. Show less
