About Afrizal Afrizal

International-minded Research Scientist and Food Technologist, with expertise in the area of microbial ecology, specifically human and mouse gut microbiome. In the last 5 years, I have been working on the application of microfluidics technique (chip-based and droplets) in isolation and cultivation of anaerobic gut bacteria; while expanding our collection of mouse intestinal bacteria using various growth media and pre-treatments. From the cultivation work, I have isolated and described 50+ novel bacteria, including three species beloging to a novel family. Apart from research experience, I also have international experience (study and work in Indonesia, Australia, Finland, and Germany), education background in food science and nutrition, and worked in the food industry for four years as a food technologist. Key skill:- Bacteria cultivation (Aerobic and Anaerobic)- Bacteria identification and characterisation- 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing (microbial ecology analysis)- Genome analysis- PDMS Chip microfluidics- Droplets microfludics- Culture media design - Experiment planning and design- Project management- Analytical chemistry (food)- Food standards- Food microbiology- Food processing- Quality control and assurance- Next generation sequencing- Basic bioinformatics- Basic R programming language- Sampling of human, mouse and pig for cultivation study- Bacteria classification and taxonomy- qPCR- FACS- HPLC- Scientific writing- Bioassay- Bacteria culture curation and management-Raw material evaluation
