Andrej A. Gajić, a Ph.D. researcher in veterinary medicine focusing on fish pathology, holds M.Sc. degrees in Biology and Conservation, and a B.Eng. degree in Ecology. His research focuses on the post-capture survival and reproduction of sharks, skates, and rays, as well as the adverse effects of fisheries on their conservation.Despite his upbringing in a war-torn country distant from the sea, Andrej has become an internationally awarded scientist, published author, distinguished lecturer, advanced diver, skydiver, and documentary filmmaker. With over 75 published papers and two books, he served as the Principal Investigator for 21 regional scientific projects in the past seven years. He is widely known for his engagements as head scientist at National Geographic and Discovery Channel. Andrej has delivered speeches at various conferences, including a TED talk, across United States, Europe, Asia and Africa. Currently, he serves as the general director of Sharklab ADRIA: Center for marine and freshwater biology in Vlorë.For his scientific achievements and contributions to effective conservation he was appointed as the Ambassador for the Mediterranean by UNEP MAP - Barcelona Convention in 2022. Besides, Andrej has received several other honors/awards, including a Special Governmental Recognition for extraordinary scientific achievements in 2021, the National Geographic EC Leadership award in 2020, Man of the Year title in 2019, and a few more.

Head ScientistDiscovery Inc Dec 2022 - PresentVlorë, AlbaniaWhat lurks in the depths? Despite the global interest in sharks and progress in deep-sea research, many life history traits of deep-sea sharks have never been studied. Through the innovative and unique approach, we will explore the ancient sharks, skates and rays that live in the depths where the light is so scattered that there is almost nothing left to detect. For the very first time, we will deliver data on disease development, presence of microplastics and responses to environmental pressures. Such results will shed a new light on the living conditions and vulnerability and will be further used for effective climate-smart regional conservation. As they far more resemble the extinct sharks of the Triassic Period than well-known living species, we anticipate meeting the most bizarre, the most unknown and the most interesting species. Unfortunately, they are facing severe pressures, and some are on the edge of extinction – thus, we hope to contribute to their conservation before it's too late. -
