North Ryde, Nsw, Au
Senior Director Special ProjectsSenior Game DesignerAristocrat Technologies, Inc.Hired in May of 2013 when ATI AU was losing floor space to Ainsworth and IGT. Sent to Australia to join the Global Marketing Department to help realign design goals and introduce global metrics for mathematical game design. Identified successful market innovations by competitors. Encouraged use of anticipations, newer art styles, clearer symbol hierarchy, appropriate and smoother animations and win presentations. Aristocrat soon returned to dominating the Australian market. Moved to the Secret Sauce Studio under Joe Kaminkow where I: provided initial innovative game mechanics for “Betty Page” and for a follow up to “Game of Thrones” that lead to patented IP; as part of directing the “Bat Girl and Cat Woman” project, gave creative direction to art and sound, as well as providing flow charts and sample code to engineers, made changes as needed to satisfy licensors, and invented a new method of triggering progressives that lead to patented IP. Moved to Reno to give support to the C2 work there. Helped build standards, define processes, wrote ‘boiler plate’ rules, and used proprietary algorithms to port ATI C3 games into the C2 markets such that the game feel was the same as the C3 version. C2 Game Designer for the Wonder 4 Brand and many Buffalo products for C2 and VLT. Helped “kick down the door” as ATI entered the Washington State C3 Market and, the following year, the Illinois VLT Market. Was preparing to drive the Game Design push for ATI into the New York VLT.Amidst all of this was Think Bigger. Think Bigger is an ATI initiative to push creativity. Over a thousand proposals per year were winnowed down to 60 chosen for a ‘Shark Tank’ series of presentations. 10 to 12 were funded to prototype. In the three years, 4 of my proposals were advanced to the ‘Shark Tank’ and 3 were chosen to prototype.
Working remotely and on location, I created new methods of game play, provided mathematical proofs, supported games through regulatory review, analyzed game play through custom simulation with both session analysis and volatility testing, as well as critiqued art, animations, symbol composition, symbol recognition, and hierarchy. Working with 3rd party content providers, social gaming companies, internet gaming companies, and class III manufacturers, I helped to produce highly successful games across multiple platforms. Either directly or indirectly via clients, my work has gone to:IGT, WagerWorks, Novomatic, Cryptologic, WMS, Aristocrat, Konami, VGT, Spielo, and several other smaller companiesProjects have included:Custom game designCustom software developmentMath modeling and simulationWriting and presenting proposalsWriting and editing large implementation documentsPreparing and editing engineering documentsTraining mathematicians new to casino gaming
First, as a consultant, then, briefly as a full-time executive, I worked to improve existing content while also designing and overseeing the production of new games. These contained the full spectrum of video casino games, including Keno, Poker, and slots. I oversaw both math and thematic design while working with studio heads and art directors to change the overall style to a more lush, photo-realistic, and story based feel.

Lead game design and development for both thematic concepts and mathematics. I provide the kernel of innovation for new game play and oversaw the implementation of those games. I worked to optimize graphical performance across multiple platforms and designing for specific platforms, jurisdictions, player profiles, and customer needs. Oversaw the spin-up of multiple SDK projects as well as the porting of content to iOS and to European internet gaming.Titles included games for: IGT, WMS, Novomatic, Cryptologic, and Greentube.

Work with a team of artists, computer engineers, technical artists, and game producers to invent creative and fun new math models and marry them to themes in the casino gaming industry. Examine the models for satisfactory elements of play. Prove the return of the games using a combination of tools taken from numerical analysis, combinatorics, markov processes, Excel, Matlab, C++, and advanced probability, then support the game through review and approval by regulatory agencies as well as assist in writing and editing the text screens, game play description, banners, pop-ups, and transition screen text. Finally, examine the performance of games in the field in terms of sales and game play trials in order to continue improvement of game design.Successful games include: Noah's Ark, Cats, Sirens, Secrets of the Forest, Michelangelo, Figaro, Charleston, Country Cash, Davinci Diamonds Poker, Jewels of India, Limited Stakes version of White Orchid, Count of Monte Cristo, Queen Isabella, Crystal Kingdom, Moon Warriors, Lily of the Valley, Double Dinosaur, Old Money, Ancient Arcadia, Kingdom of Gold, Golden Knight, Romeo and Juliet, Renoir Riches, Princess of Paradise, Shambala, Lion Heart, Super Hoot Loot, Irving the Viking, Captain Payback, Maggie and The Martians, Cave King, Golden Blossom, Travelling Gnomes, Limited Stakes version of Southern Belle
