    • Applied targeted nanopore sequencing, functional genomics, and population genetics to understand the molecular processes and evolutionary dynamics underlying the origins of new species.• My research focused on understanding the theory of species evolution by natural selection for reinforcement, including; 1) developing a theoretical population genetics framework to study reinforcement with genomic data2) building techniques for sequencing and assembly of the non-model Phlox wildflower species genomes3) functionally demonstrating the genes and identifying the mutations causing divergence in flower color, and the evolution of new species, by reinforcement in Phlox drummondii.• For this work I successfully developed, wrote, acquired, and implemented funding for 9 research grants totaling $2.8 million, including an NIH R35.• Developed, optimized, and maintained laboratory protocols and SOPs for functional genomics in a non-model plant system, including; DNA (genomic, HMW, & uHMW), RNA, and protein extractions, nucleic acid quality control, NGS and long-read nanopore library preparation and sequencing, PCR, cDNA synthesis, qRT-PCR, plasmid vector design and production (gateway cloning, restriction-site cloning, whole plasmid synthesis), bacterial cell culture, bacterial and plant transformations, virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS), luciferase reporter assays, genome assembly, and association mapping.
