I started studying Medicine because I wanted to understand how the human body is able to 'run the place'. Becoming a medical doctor gave me some insights in the organisation of our healthcare at doctor- patient level. To focus more on the mechanisms of disease in the background of patient care I became a resident in Medical Microbiology. As a resident and later as a researcher I got fascinated by bacteria and how creative they were in developing ways to survive antibiotics and our immune system. Being a resident kept me up to date on what was happening in the clinics on antibiotic resistance and also on the implementation of the digital electronic patient records. However, I felt that I was more a researcher than a medical doctor, and got interested in Medical Informatics when a new hospital information system was introduced. I chose to quit and finished the master Medical Informatics. The mathematics, programming and logical thinking were an oasis for me and confirmed my choice to go into Medical Informatics. With my knowledge and experience from both worlds I would like to support medical doctors and healthcare workers by adapting the computer systems to their demands.
