This is done by developing new methods and implementing new equipment, as well as improving workflow and implementing LEAN in all areas of the lab.

Group Of Bioorganic Chemistry

• Development of new biologically relevant molecules as well as new procedures and techniques in oligosaccharide synthesis.• Responsible for IT and maintenance of scientific apparatus. I have created a shared network drive in the group which have eased the workflow and created a base of information for the benefit of all group members• Supervision of 5-8 chemistry students at bachelor or master level.

Group Of Bioorganic Chemistry

• Total synthesis of various iminosugar derivatives (up to 22 steps). I have worked on a total of four projects each of which have required 6-24 months to finish. This has involved the use of the following skills:o Synthetic organic chemistryo Purification (chromatography, distillation, recrystallization)o Use of NMR and MS analysiso Use of inert atmosphere and dry solventso Extensive use of protecting group chemistryo Enzyme crystallographyo Enzyme assays (activity and thermal shift assays)• Maintenance and purchasing of laboratory equipment and IT• Teaching both laboratory and theoretical exercises in 3 different courses with classes of ca. 30 students• Supervision of 8-10 bachelor and master studentsTechniques: : Project management, Organic synthesis, Total synthesis, Chromatrography, MS, NMR, Protein Purification, CD spectroscopy, DSF (Thermofluor assays), Enzyme kinetics, Protein Crystallography, Safety, Troubleshooting, Tutoring, Teaching.

During my time in the lab of Dr. Janet Deane I tested four compounds (synthesized by myself) as inhibitors against the galactocerebrosidase enzyme. I purified the enzyme from cell cultures and crystallized it with my compounds in the active site. These crystals were then taken to The Diamond Light Source where x-ray diffraction data was obtained and this data was refined into a crystal structure showing the binding mode of the drugs. Activity and stability measurements of the enzyme with the drugs bound were also performed.Techniques: Protein purification, Protein crystallisation, Data collection of x-ray data at the Diamond Light Source, Solving and refining x-ray structures of protein crystals, Kinetic enzyme assays, Differential scanning fluorimetry (Thermofluor) and Circular dichroism spectroscopy
