Naval Architect
CurrentTechnical position responsible for applying theories, concepts, principles, and practices of Naval Architecture, supporting resolution of complex engineering issues on new construction, maintenance, repair, and conversion projects of US Navy ships.- Provide comprehensive expertise and serve as organization's representative in all areas of Naval Architecture by performing, reviewing, responding to, and presenting Level 2 Surveys, Engineering Service Requests (ESR), Departure From Specifications (DFS), and work specifications.- Conduct ship checks to determine conformance and non-conformance of structural items providing sketches, pictures, and discussion with shipboard crew members and waterfront operations members.- Perform complex structural calculations predicting behavior of structural components under assumed loading, resulting in development of detailed design ensuring safe and efficient operation.
Principal Engineer
Professional-level technical position responsible for performing variety of engineering tasks in areas of expertise. Acted independently as engineer or in project management capacity, leading smaller projects, and for portions of larger or complex projects. - Led worldwide team in development of systematic risk assessment approach, validating Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) system integrity, targeting different levels, overall MPD operations, MPD system design and individual sub-system/equipment design; presented at IADC Critical Issues Middle East Conference & Exhibition, December 2016.- Contributed to fragility analysis of spent fuel pool building at nuclear power plant, involving walk-down and modeling of structure, generation of response spectra, and performing seismic qualification and fragility evaluations of structure, meeting post-Fukushima safety requirements.- Performed fragility analyses for system critical relays in nuclear power plants, using both CDFM approach and Separation-of-Variables methodology, determining if existing relays are acceptable for updated seismic conditions or if they need to be upgraded. - Contributed to Probabilistic Safety Assessments for nuclear power plants, including systems analysis, fault tree modeling, event tree modeling, and split fraction rules development, used to meet regulatory requirements.- Acted as mentor to junior engineers, ensuring strong understanding of assigned tasks in both marine and nuclear industries.
Lead Engineer
Performed engineering assignments involving one major project or several smaller projects. Required fully competent application of conventional engineering knowledge. Independently evaluated, selected, and applied standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications. - Performed overpressure analysis on equipment hatch of Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) nuclear power plant containment building; accuracy of results within 1% of real world test pressure results. High Confidence of Low Probability of Failure (HCLPF) calculations were performed, determining pressure at which gross failure was expected.- Analyzed gate valves and lifting mechanisms of various sizes and designs used in nuclear power plants, verifying ability to be opened and closed with pressure on one side of valve. - Completed Blowout Preventer (BOP) Maintenance and Inspection in Deepwater Operations study, evaluating current maintenance, inspection, and testing practices / existing regulations, determining criticality of individual subcomponents, reliability of individual components, and availability of overall BOP system. - Projected corrosion rates and developed repair schedules for various vessels, assisting in budgeting and planning for next 25 years.
Engineer
Performed engineering design review and analysis assignments involving one major project or several smaller, less complex projects. Projects required competent application of conventional knowledge in particular field of engineering. - Performed modal, stress, and response spectra analyses on sump strainer, verifying design that proved to be too difficult for manufacturer to complete in house.- Contributed to overpressure analysis of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) containment structure, using global model to analyze interaction between containment structure and surroundings; multiple penetrations and discontinuities of structure were analyzed determining limiting failure location and mode.- Conducted fatigue assessments of pressure vessels utilizing FEA; solid models were created for application of fatigue calculation method outlined in ASME BPVC, Section VIII – Division 2, used in verifying design.- Performed Bayesian updating of events, developing plant specific failure rates; alpha factor to multiple Greek letter factor conversion was performed using Monte Carlo simulation. - Reviewed variety of crane designs, verifying compliance to API 2C standards.- Prepared trim and stability manuals and damaged stability manuals for vessels.- Performed structural and stability analysis of complex casino barge. Gaming decks were built on top of truss framing structure on top of two interconnected barges such that they could be fixed in submerged configuration. Positive net buoyancy of submerged barges allowed for level of gaming deck to remain constant as loads and river level vary. Analyzing over 60 load cases led to identifying highly stressed areas and recommending design changes.
Engineer
Performed engineering design review and analysis assignments requiring application of conventional knowledge in particular field of engineering. - Provided 24-hour emergency support to vessels as part of rapid response team, assessing damaged stability and strength, developing plan to safely resolve situation while minimizing environmental impact.- Assessed risk and vulnerability of passenger ferries and terminals, increasing safety of public. - Performed scantling reviews of ships, barges, and offshore structures, verifying compliance to variety of codes.- Performed Condition Assessment Program (CAP) analyses for oil tankers and LNG tankers, demonstrating vessels were maintained to high standards.- Conducted deadweight surveys of deck and casino barges.
