Throughout my placement in the Department of Restoration, Museums & Technical Works of the Ministry of Culture of Greece, the laboratory test work was focused in the analysis and the characterization of restoration mortars.I was exposed to different methods of mineral and chemical characterization and I broadened the knowledge which I got during my diploma thesis.My duties were mainly focused in a laboratory research using the equipment below:-DTA-TG from Labsys Evo Setaram (at 1600°C). It was used for the deferential thermal analysis in order to determine the mineral compounds found in ancient mortars.-XRD D2 Phaser from Bruker, used for the X-ray Diffraction for mineral analysis.-XRF, TRACER IV-SD from Bruker, which was used in the X-ray fluorescence, for the chemical analysis of antiquities.

During the five weeks of the Industrial Summer Training at the National Institute of Geological and Mineral Exploration of Greece (IGME) I dealt with Natural hazards and other geo-environmental problems entailing from the specific geological structure of Greece. More specifically, the laboratory test work was focused on a group of minerals called asbestos. Due to their chemical properties, these minerals may cause severe health problems and even deaths if people are exposed to them in their everyday life. Therefore, raw materials that were intended for construction, should had to be tested for asbestos existence. The methods which were used during the internship were the Optical microscopic analysis Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD).
